There's a reason the Heritage Rough Rider has become one of the most popular rimfire revolvers around. It takes the look and feel of the old Single Action Army, scales it down to .22 LR, and keeps things simple. Cock the hammer, squeeze the trigger, repeat. No batteries, no fuss, just the kind of shooting that got most of us hooked in the first place. This version trades the usual western blue-and-wood look for an all black setup, with black oxide on the barrel and cylinder and black laminate grips to match. Same classic profile, more modern attitude.
The longer 6.5-inch barrel is the one to grab if accuracy matters to you. The extended sight radius makes the fixed front blade and notched rear a lot easier to line up, and the extra length wrings more velocity out of .22 LR loads. That combination makes this a natural for tin cans, steel plates, paper targets, and keeping pests in check around the property. The micro-threaded barrel is set into the frame for a tight barrel-to-cylinder gap, and the cylinder locks up snug with well-timed action, so shots land where you point them.
At its heart, this is a fun gun in the best sense. Six rounds of .22 LR in the cylinder, a crisp single action trigger, and ammo that costs pennies a shot means you can burn through a brick without a second thought. It's also a great teaching tool. The deliberate load-cock-fire rhythm of a single action slows new shooters down and builds good habits, while the mild recoil keeps things comfortable for smaller-framed folks.
The black-on-black treatment sets this model apart from the sea of traditional finishes out there. It's a sharp, understated look that still carries all the Old West character the Rough Rider is known for. Pair it with a hip holster and a pocket full of rimfire and you've got an afternoon sorted.
This particular model ships with the .22 LR cylinder only, so out of the box it runs .22 LR. The Rough Rider platform is designed to accept a .22 WMR cylinder, and Heritage sells them separately, so you can add magnum capability down the road with a simple cylinder swap. Never fire .22 WMR through the .22 LR cylinder.
It's one of the most common recommendations for exactly that. The single action design means the hammer has to be cocked for every shot, which naturally slows things down and builds deliberate habits. Combine that with the soft recoil and low cost of .22 LR ammo and you've got a great learning platform.
You open the loading gate on the right side of the frame, then rotate the cylinder to load or eject one chamber at a time. There's an ejector rod under the barrel to push out spent cases. It's slower than a swing-out cylinder, but it's part of the classic cowboy-style experience and simple to learn.
The 6.5 inch barrel gives you a longer sight radius than the shorter versions, which makes the fixed sights easier to shoot well. The barrel is micro-threaded into the frame for a consistent barrel-to-cylinder gap, and the action timing is tight. For tin cans, steel, and small game inside reasonable rimfire distances, it'll do its job if you do yours.
