Henry took the classic Big Boy formula and shortened it into a 16.5 inch carbine, which cuts nearly a pound of barrel weight and brings the overall length down to a handy 35 inches. That makes this one a natural for hunting thick timber, riding in a truck or side-by-side, or just spending a relaxed afternoon working the lever at the range.
The .327 Federal Magnum is one of the most underrated cartridges going, and out of a 16.5 inch barrel it picks up serious velocity. It hits hard enough for coyotes, hogs, and deer-sized game at woods distances, all with mild recoil that makes long range sessions easy on the shoulder. Better yet, this carbine also feeds .32 H&R Magnum, so you can load up light for plinking and small game or run full-power magnums when it counts. The tubular magazine holds 7 rounds, giving you 7+1 on tap. If you already run a .327 revolver, pairing it with this carbine is about as practical as a classic combo gets.
This is where Henry earns its reputation. The receiver is polished hardened brass, the straight-grip stock and forearm are select American walnut, and a brass barrel band and buttplate tie the whole look together. The large loop lever adds a touch of western flair and works great with gloved hands. Sights are a brass bead up front and a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear with a reversible white diamond insert, and the receiver comes drilled and tapped if you'd rather mount glass. The action is smooth right out of the box, the way an American-made Henry should be. Yes. This carbine is chambered for .327 Federal Magnum, and .32 H&R Magnum runs through it as well. That gives you a lot of flexibility, with softer-shooting .32 H&R loads for plinking and small game, and full-power .327 Federal Magnum for hunting or serious work.
This model loads through the removable brass magazine tube under the barrel rather than a side loading gate. You twist and pull the inner tube, drop rounds into the loading port, and slide the tube back in. It holds 7 rounds in the magazine plus one in the chamber, and unloading is quick and safe since you don't have to cycle live rounds through the action.
You can. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so all you need is a compatible Henry scope base and rings. That said, the adjustable semi-buckhorn rear and brass bead front sights are well suited to the practical range of the .327 Federal Magnum, so plenty of owners never bother with glass.
Within reasonable woods distances, yes. The .327 Federal Magnum gains a healthy velocity bump out of the 16.5 inch barrel compared to a revolver, and with good hunting bullets it handles deer-sized game at short to moderate range. It's also a solid pick for hogs, coyotes, and general farm duty, with recoil light enough that just about anyone can shoot it well.
