That polished hardened brass receiver catches the light like nothing else on the rack, and when you pair it with select American walnut, a brass barrel band, brass buttplate, and a 20-inch blued octagon barrel, you get a rifle that looks like it walked straight out of the 1870s. This version adds the large loop lever, which gives you extra room to run the action with gloves on and adds a little Hollywood flair to an already good-looking rifle.
Henry built this one with both loading options, and that's a bigger deal than it sounds. The side loading gate lets you feed rounds into the 10-round tubular magazine without dropping the rifle from your shoulder, while the traditional removable magazine tube is still there for quick, safe unloading at the end of the day. Cowboy action competitors and hunters alike appreciate having it both ways. And .45 Colt picks up a meaningful velocity bump out of that 20-inch barrel compared to a revolver, so this makes a fine woods gun for deer and hogs at reasonable distances, plus a natural companion to a single-action sixgun in the same caliber.
The fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight comes with a reversible white diamond insert, matched up front with a brass bead that stands out well against timber and paper alike. If you'd rather run glass, the receiver comes drilled and tapped for a scope mount. At 8.68 pounds with a 38.5-inch overall length and a 14-inch length of pull, it settles into the shoulder nicely and soaks up what little recoil .45 Colt produces. The action is as smooth as lever guns get, the trigger breaks clean, and the transfer bar safety means no manual safety cluttering up those classic lines. Yes, this is the Side Gate version of the Big Boy. You can load rounds through the gate on the right side of the receiver without lowering the rifle, and Henry also kept the traditional removable magazine tube, which makes unloading quick and safe. Having both options is one of the best features of this generation of Big Boy.
You can. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, and Henry offers the BB-RSM scope mount for this model. That said, the factory semi-buckhorn rear and brass bead front sights are excellent, and plenty of owners never feel the need for glass at typical .45 Colt distances.
Inside about 100 yards, absolutely. The 20-inch barrel squeezes noticeably more velocity out of .45 Colt than a revolver does, making it a capable choice for deer and hogs in the woods and thick brush. It also pairs perfectly with a .45 Colt revolver for a matched cartridge setup in the field or on a cowboy action stage.
The oversized loop gives your hand more room to work the action, which is a real advantage when you're wearing gloves in cold weather. It also cycles a bit more naturally for folks with larger hands, and plenty of buyers just like the classic Western look it gives the rifle. Function-wise, the action runs the same smooth Henry stroke either way.
