There's a reason the Big Boy has become one of the most recognizable lever guns on the rack. That polished hardened brass receiver catches your eye from across the room, and the 20 inch blued octagon barrel and select American walnut furniture back it up with real presence. This version, model H006GL, adds two features Henry fans asked for over the years: a side loading gate and an oversized loop lever. The bigger loop gives you extra room for gloved hands and makes cycling the action feel that much more natural, whether you're working a deer stand in November or running a cowboy action stage.
Henry built their reputation on tube-loading rifles, and this one keeps that removable tube magazine because it makes unloading quick and painless. The side gate sits just below the ejection port and lets you top off the 10 round magazine without ever dropping the rifle from your shoulder. It's the best of both worlds, and once you've used it, you'll wonder how you got along without it.
Chambered for .44 Magnum and happy to run .44 Special all day, this rifle pairs beautifully with a revolver in the same caliber. The 20 inch barrel wrings noticeably more velocity out of those cartridges than any handgun can, which makes it a legitimate choice for whitetail and hogs inside 100 yards or so, plus a solid option for keeping around the property. The fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight comes with a reversible white diamond insert to line up with the brass bead front, and the receiver is drilled and tapped if you'd rather run glass.
The straight grip stock and forearm are genuine American walnut, dressed up with a polished brass barrel band and buttplate that tie the whole rifle together. Add in the smooth action, crisp trigger, and transfer bar safety, and you've got an American-made lever gun that shoots as good as it looks.
Yes, it handles both. The rifle is chambered for .44 Magnum, so .44 Special runs through it just fine with lighter recoil and a softer report. A lot of owners practice with Specials and save the Magnums for hunting or heavier work.
Both, and that's one of the biggest draws of this model. The side gate below the ejection port lets you top off the magazine without lowering the rifle, while the traditional removable tube makes unloading quick and safe. Older Big Boy models were tube-load only, so this setup is a real upgrade.
You can. The brass receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so all you need is a Henry scope base and rings. That said, the adjustable semi-buckhorn rear and brass bead front sights are very usable as-is for typical lever gun distances.
It comes down to how you use the rifle. The oversized loop is a big help if you hunt with gloves in cold weather, and plenty of folks just prefer the classic look and the extra room when cycling the action. Function is identical otherwise, so it's purely a matter of preference.
