Description

There is a reason pistol caliber lever guns never go out of style, and the Henry Big Boy Steel Carbine makes the case better than most. Chambered for .357 Magnum and .38 Special, this compact carbine wears a 16.5 inch round blued steel barrel that squeezes serious extra velocity out of magnum loads, putting them in a whole different class than what you get from a revolver. The big draw on this model is the loading setup. Henry gave it both a side loading gate and their traditional removable tube magazine, so you can top off rounds on the fly or dump the tube safely without cycling every cartridge through the action.

Built Around the Steel Frame Advantage

Where the brass Big Boys carry some heft, the Big Boy Steel version trims roughly a pound and a half off, coming in at about 6.59 pounds unloaded with a trim 34 inch overall length. That makes it a natural for truck racks, saddle scabbards, and long days in thick timber. The large loop lever runs smooth with gloves on and adds a little classic western character while it is at it. Checkered American walnut on the fore-end and straight grip stock gives you real purchase in wet weather, and the black rubber recoil pad keeps the already mild recoil comfortable through long range sessions.

Sights, Optics, and Range Time with the Big Boy Carbine

Out of the box you get a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight with a diamond insert and a brass bead up front, a combination that picks up fast in the field. If you would rather run glass or a red dot, the receiver comes drilled and tapped for Henry's BB-RSM scope mount. The tube holds seven rounds of .357, and cheap .38 Special makes this thing an absolute blast for plinking days. Whether you are after whitetail inside 100 yards, keeping a handy camp rifle around, or matching it up with a .357 revolver, this carbine covers a lot of ground with one gun. The in-hammer transfer bar safety and sling swivel studs round out a very complete package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Henry Big Boy Steel Carbine shoot both .357 Magnum and .38 Special?

Yes, it handles both interchangeably. The .38 Special is a shorter version of the same cartridge case, so it feeds and fires fine through this action. A lot of owners run inexpensive .38s for plinking and practice, then load .357 Magnum when it is time to hunt.

How do you load this carbine, through the side gate or the tube?

Both, and that is one of the best things about this model. You can feed rounds through the side loading gate like a traditional lever gun, or remove the inner magazine tube and load from the top. The removable tube also lets you unload safely without working every round through the action.

Can I mount a scope or red dot on the Big Boy Steel Carbine?

Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory and accepts Henry's BB-RSM scope mount, which is sold separately. With a low powered scope or a red dot, this carbine makes a quick handling setup for hunting inside typical woods distances.

Is the 16.5 inch barrel enough for deer hunting with .357 Magnum?

It is, within sensible range. The carbine length barrel gives .357 Magnum a significant velocity bump over a revolver, bringing it up near light rifle territory. With good bullets it is a proven whitetail and hog setup at woods distances, generally inside 100 yards or so.
