There is something about a brass receiver and an octagon barrel that just stops people at the counter, and this Big Boy has both. Henry builds this one around their polished hardened brass receiver, then dresses it with a straight grip American walnut stock and forearm, a brass barrel band, and a brass buttplate to tie it all together. The 20 inch octagon blued steel barrel gives it that old West profile while adding sight radius and velocity that pistol caliber cartridges really benefit from.
The oversized loop is more than a nod to the movies. It gives your hand extra room to cycle the action with winter gloves on, and plenty of folks just find it more comfortable to run than a standard lever. Combine that with the smooth action and clean trigger Henry is known for, and this rifle is a genuine pleasure to shoot all afternoon.
This rifle handles .357 Magnum and .38 Special interchangeably, which makes it about as flexible as a lever gun gets. Load soft shooting .38s for cheap, easy range days and new shooters, then step up to full power .357 loads for hogs, deer inside sensible distances, or serious work around the property. The side loading gate lets you top off the 10 round tube on the fly, and the removable inner magazine tube makes unloading quick and simple. Best of both worlds.
Out of the box you get a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight with a reversible white diamond insert and a brass bead up front, a setup that is fast to pick up and easy on the eyes. If glass is more your speed, the receiver comes drilled and tapped for a scope mount. At 38.5 inches overall and 8.68 pounds, it carries with a solid, planted feel that soaks up recoil, and the 14 inch length of pull fits most folks right out of the box. American made, built to be shot, and good looking enough to hang above the fireplace between range trips.
Yes, it runs both. The rifle is chambered for .357 Magnum, which means .38 Special feeds and fires just fine too. A lot of owners burn through affordable .38s for casual range time and keep full power .357 loads on hand for hunting or more serious use.
You can. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory and accepts Henry's BB-RSM scope mount, sold separately. That said, the adjustable semi-buckhorn rear and brass bead front sights are excellent as is, especially at the distances a .357 lever gun shines.
This model gives you both loading options. You can top off the 10 round magazine through the side gate like a classic lever gun, or pull the removable inner tube to load or unload quickly and safely. It is a genuinely handy setup, particularly when you want to empty the magazine without cycling every round through the action.
It comes down to preference. The oversized loop gives you extra clearance for gloved hands, which is a real plus for cold weather hunts, and many people simply like the feel and the classic Western look. Function is otherwise identical to the standard loop Big Boy.
