There's something about a short-barreled lever gun in .45 Colt that just feels right in the hands, and Henry nailed it with the Big Boy Steel Carbine. The steel receiver trims well over a pound and a half compared to the brass-framed Big Boys, bringing this one in around 6.6 pounds with a 34 inch overall length. That makes it an easy carry in thick timber, on horseback, or riding in a truck. The 16.5 inch round blued barrel keeps things compact without giving up much velocity from the .45 Colt, and the large loop lever cycles fast even with gloves on.
This is one of Henry's side gate models, which means you get the best of both worlds. Top off the 7 round magazine through the loading gate like a traditional Western lever gun, or pull the inner tube to unload safely without running every round through the action. Once you've lived with that setup, it's hard to go back. The action runs slick right out of the box, and the in-hammer transfer bar safety means you can carry it with confidence without any crossbolt safety breaking up those clean lines.
Out of the box you're working with a brass bead front sight and a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear with a white diamond insert, a proven combo that picks up quick in the field. The receiver comes drilled and tapped, so mounting a scope base for a red dot or low-power scope is a simple weekend project if your eyes prefer glass.
The American walnut stock and forend wear crisp, deep checkering that looks sharp and gives you real grip when the weather turns. Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so it accepts Henry's BB-RSM scope base. From there you can run a traditional scope with rings or a red dot, which is a popular setup for hog hunting and aging eyes alike.

You can load rounds through the side gate on the receiver just like a classic Western lever gun, or remove the inner magazine tube to load and unload without cycling rounds through the action. It's a genuinely handy combination in the field and at the range.

The 16.5 inch barrel squeezes noticeably more velocity out of .45 Colt than a revolver, and heavier hunting loads carry plenty of punch for whitetail and hogs at woods distances. The compact 34 inch overall length also makes it a natural fit for tree stands, blinds, and thick brush.
It uses an in-hammer transfer bar safety instead of a crossbolt or tang switch. The transfer bar keeps the rifle from firing unless the trigger is fully pulled, so it's safe to carry with the hammer down on a loaded chamber. It also keeps the receiver clean and traditional looking.
