Grand Power took two of the most proven platforms in the world and built something that borrows the best of each. The ARAQ-S runs the familiar AR-15/M4 ergonomics and controls that most people already know, but it feeds from standard AK47/AKM pattern magazines and fires the hard-hitting 7.62×39 round. That combo means you get a modern manual of arms paired with cheap, plentiful ammo and magazines you can find just about anywhere.
Instead of a direct impingement system, this one uses a short-stroke piston. That setup keeps a lot of the hot gas and fouling out of the action, so the gun tends to run cleaner and cooler, which is a real plus on a shorter 11-inch barrel chambered in a round like 7.62×39. The barrel comes threaded in 5/8-24, giving you an easy path to a muzzle device or a can down the road.
The free-float handguard is slotted for M-LOK and carries accessory rail sections, so lights, lasers, grips, and bipods all have a home. One of the slicker touches is that the handguard can come off without any tools. Up top, the receiver wears a full-length Picatinny rail for your optic of choice, and the gun includes a forward assist and a case deflector for right-handed shooters.
This configuration ships with the SB Tactical SBA5 brace and Grand Power's own polymer pistol grip, which is shaped for a comfortable, secure hold. The aluminum construction and matte black finish keep things durable and understated. The ARAQ-S feeds from standard AK47/AKM pattern 7.62×39 magazines, which is one of its biggest selling points. That means you can run common, widely available mags instead of hunting down proprietary ones. Steel and polymer AK mags are both easy to source.
Yes, the 11-inch barrel comes threaded in 5/8-24, which is the common pitch for .30 caliber rifles. That makes it simple to add a muzzle brake, flash hider, or a suppressor if you choose to go that route.
A short-stroke piston drives the action without venting hot gas and fouling directly back into the receiver the way direct impingement does. The result is a gun that generally runs cleaner and cooler, which is helpful on a short-barreled 7.62×39 setup. It also tends to make maintenance a little easier.
The receiver has a full-length Picatinny rail up top, so you can mount red dots, LPVOs, or whatever sighting system you prefer. The free-float M-LOK handguard also carries accessory rail sections for lights, lasers, and grips. Keep in mind it does not ship with iron sights or an optic included.
