Description

The GL-15 has quietly become Great Lakes Firearms' best seller, and once you handle one it makes sense. The star of the show is the 16 inch heavy-profile 416R stainless steel barrel with a 1:8 twist, chambered in .223 Wylde. That chamber splits the difference between .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO spec, so you can feed it either round and still get match-grade accuracy instead of choosing one over the other. The 1:8 twist stabilizes everything from lightweight 55 grain plinking ammo up to heavier 69 and 77 grain match loads, which makes this a genuinely versatile barrel for the range, varmints, or coyote work.

What Sets the GL-15 Apart

The bright stainless barrel against black receivers gives this rifle a sharp two-tone look, but the build underneath is what earns the repeat customers. You get 7075 T6 aluminum receivers, mil-spec controls and trigger, M4 feed ramps, and a carbine-length gas system with a low-profile .750 gas block tucked under the handguard. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28 and wears a GLFA muzzle brake out of the box, which takes the edge off an already soft-recoiling cartridge. These rifles are built in Michigan, and Great Lakes backs them with a lifetime warranty.

Room to Grow with the GL-15 223 Wylde

The 15.25 inch free-float M-LOK aluminum handguard runs nearly the full length of the barrel and lines up with the flat-top upper for one continuous Picatinny rail. That means plenty of real estate for an optic, backup sights, lights, bipods, or whatever else your setup calls for. There are no sights included, so plan on mounting glass or irons before your first range trip. A 6-position collapsible stock lets the rifle fit different shooters and layers of clothing, and at around 6.8 pounds it carries easily without feeling whippy.

Range-Ready Value from Great Lakes

Owners consistently report smooth cycling and surprising accuracy for the money, with plenty of folks stacking rounds at 100 yards and beyond right out of the box. It ships with one 30 round magazine, so add ammo and an optic and you are set. Whether this is your first AR or the next addition to the safe, the GL-15 is a hard package to beat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Great Lakes GL-15 shoot both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO?

Yes. The .223 Wylde chamber was designed specifically to handle both cartridges safely without giving up accuracy on either one. It splits the difference between the tighter .223 Rem chamber and the looser 5.56 NATO chamber, so you can feed it whatever is on the shelf and expect it to shoot well.

Does the GL-15 come with sights or an optic?

No, this rifle ships without sights. The upside is the full-length Picatinny rail running across the upper receiver and handguard gives you a clean slate for a red dot, LPVO, magnified scope, or flip-up irons. Plan to add your preferred sighting setup before heading to the range.

What ammo weight works best with the 1:8 twist barrel?

The 1:8 twist is a great middle-ground rate that stabilizes a wide range of bullet weights. It handles common 55 grain range ammo just fine and also does well with heavier 62 to 77 grain loads. That flexibility is one reason this barrel setup is so popular for everything from plinking to predator hunting.

Who makes the GL-15 and is it covered by a warranty?

The GL-15 is built by Great Lakes Firearms & Ammunition in Michigan, and the company backs its rifles with a lifetime warranty. GLFA has built a solid reputation for accurate, well-finished rifles at a working man's price, and this .223 Wylde model is their best-selling gun.
