This is the same handguard Grey Ghost Precision runs on their MKII rifles, now sold on its own for folks putting together their own AR-10. It free floats the barrel so nothing but the barrel nut touches your barrel, which is exactly what you want when you're chasing consistent accuracy out of a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor build. Extruded from 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, it stays rigid without turning your rifle into a boat anchor, and the Olive Drab Green anodized finish keeps corrosion in check while giving the build a distinct look.
Up top you get a full-length Picatinny rail with engraved T-markings, which makes returning optics and backup irons to the same spot a whole lot easier. M-LOK slots sit at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions with additional forward slots at 1 and 11 o'clock, so mounting a light, laser, bipod stud, or hand stop at an offset angle is straightforward. The 15-inch length gives you plenty of real estate to spread out your gear and get your support hand way out front.
Installation is refreshingly simple. It uses a non-proprietary barrel nut that doesn't require timing, so you just torque the nut to 65 ft-lbs, slide the handguard on until it's flush with the upper, and lock it down with the two provided fastening screws at roughly 35 in-lbs. Left and right index tabs keep the rail from twisting once it's on. The barrel nut works with a standard armorer's wrench.
One thing worth knowing up front: this is a DPMS High Profile pattern designed for forged uppers and most billet uppers. If you're running something like an Aero Precision M5 or another brand with tighter tolerances, you may need to file a few thousandths off the inside of the anti-rotation tabs for a clean fit. It's a quick job with a file and a little patience, and once it's on, it stays put.
This handguard is built to a DPMS High Profile pattern and works with all forged AR-10 uppers and most billet uppers. If you're running a billet upper like an Aero Precision M5 or a similar tighter-tolerance brand, you may need to file a small amount off the inside of the anti-rotation tabs for it to slide on. Note that it is not intended for true Armalite-pattern AR-10 receivers.
It ships with the non-proprietary barrel nut and two fastening screws you need to mount it. The barrel nut works with a standard armorer's wrench, so if you don't already have one on the bench you'll want to grab it before you start. The nut doesn't require timing, which keeps installation simple.
Torque the barrel nut to 65 ft-lbs, slide the handguard on until it sits flush with the upper receiver, then snug down the two provided screws to around 35 in-lbs. The left and right index tabs keep everything from rotating once it's tightened. It's a clean, repeatable install that most builders can knock out at home.
You get M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions plus forward slots at 1 and 11 o'clock, which covers lights, lasers, bipods, hand stops, and QD sling mounts. The full-length Picatinny top rail with T-markings handles optics and backup sights. The 15-inch length gives you a lot of room to lay everything out the way you like.
