If your 870 still has the factory plastic follower, you're already running behind. The OEM piece is cheap, easy to break, and widely recognized as the source of feeding problems in thousands of shotguns. The GG&G slotted follower fixes this with real engineering.
Machined from 304 stainless steel in the USA, this follower resists corrosion and the two biggest culprits in follower failures: galling (binding caused by friction between similar metals) and contaminant imbedding. The stainless construction stays smooth and reliable through years of use, which is why you'll see this upgrade on competition shotguns and duty weapons alike.
The slots on this follower are purpose-built for dimpled magazine tubes that came on many newer 870s. If your tube has those raised dimples pressed into it, you need the slotted version. Standard smooth tubes require a different follower. The slots allow proper seating and prevent the follower from tipping or binding as it cycles.
The 6061-T6 aluminum insert anodized in bright red serves double duty. Visually, it's impossible to miss when your magazine is empty. But GG&G machines tactile features into that insert so you can feel the difference between an empty tube and a loaded shell by touch alone. That matters when you're working in low light or keeping your eyes downrange.
The deep spring pocket also keeps the magazine spring under control, preventing the kind of irregular spring tension that causes feeding hiccups. Installation is straightforward and takes just minutes. It drops in exactly like the factory follower, though newer guns with a cut tab in the magazine tube will need that tab slightly modified or removed first.
The slotted version is engineered for 870s with dimpled magazine tubes (those raised indents pressed into newer tubes). If your tube is smooth, you need the standard non-slotted follower. Using the wrong type can cause binding and feeding issues. If you're unsure, check inside your magazine tube for the dimples.
Yes, it installs the same way as the factory follower. However, if your 870 has a cut tab protruding into the magazine tube (common on some newer models), that tab needs to be removed or filed down slightly before the new follower will fit.
