Gemtech went back to the drawing board with the Abyss 5.56, and it shows. This is a hard-use rifle suppressor built around five patent-pending technologies, with the headline feature being a low backpressure design that keeps gas and carbon from blowing back through your rifle and into your face. Anyone who has run a suppressed AR knows that gassy feeling after a few mags. The Abyss cuts that down noticeably, which means a cleaner gun, a more comfortable shooting session, and better reliability from your host rifle.
The Abyss uses a smart mix of 17-4PH stainless steel and 6AL4V titanium, giving you thicker walls than a lot of competing cans without the weight penalty. The tubeless construction trims unneeded ounces, landing at 16 ounces with a 6.2 inch overall length and 1.64 inch diameter. It wears a high-temp Cerakote finish in black, and it is full-auto rated, so high round count range days and hard duty use are well within its comfort zone. Beyond 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem, it is also rated for 6mm ARC and 5.7x28mm, so one stamp can cover a few different hosts.
Gemtech's high-efficiency baffle stack handles the decibel reduction, while the GM-S1 end cap knocks down muzzle flash from the very first shot. That first-round flash is where a lot of suppressors fall short, so it is nice to see it addressed head-on here. Wider 3/4 inch wrench flats make mounting and removal easier when the can gets grimy.
The rear of the can uses the industry-standard 1.375-24 HUB pattern, and it ships with a 1/2×28 direct thread mount installed. That means you can run it straight out of the box on most 5.56 rifles, or swap to just about any HUB-compatible mount you already own. If your safe holds more than one threaded rifle, that kind of flexibility goes a long way.
