Most 9mm ARs start life as a 5.56 lower with an adapter shoved in the magwell. The FX-9 does not. Freedom Ordnance machined this one from billet aluminum around the Glock magazine from the start, which is why the receiver set runs about an inch shorter than a standard AR and the beveled magwell swallows double stack Glock-pattern mags without drama. You still get the selector, mag release, and last round bolt hold open right where your thumb expects them, so if you have spent any time behind an AR, there is nothing new to learn here.
This configuration pairs a 4 inch black nitride barrel with a 3 inch faux suppressor up front, giving it that clean integrally suppressed profile while keeping overall length to just 18.5 inches. At 4.45 pounds, it is genuinely easy to keep on target one handed or braced up. The SB Tactical SBA3 brace comes installed from the factory, a nice step up from the blade style found on earlier models, and the free float M-LOK handguard leaves plenty of real estate for a light or hand stop. The flat top receiver arrives optic ready, so plan on adding a red dot. Simple blowback operation plus nitride treated steel internals, including the bolt, extractor, and feed ramp, keep it running through steady range use.
The included ETS 31 round magazine gets you started, and from there the mag options are about as deep as it gets. Factory Glock mags, aftermarket sticks, even 50 round drums have a strong track record in this platform. It runs happily on common 115 grain FMJ, which means cheap trigger time. Made in the USA and backed by Freedom Ordnance's limited lifetime warranty, the FX-9 makes a strong case as a truck gun, home defense setup, or just the most fun thing in your range bag.
The FX-9 was designed from the ground up around Glock-pattern 9mm double stack magazines. It ships with an ETS 31-round mag, and it also runs factory Glock mags, aftermarket sticks from brands like SGM and KCI, and even 50-round drums. That makes spare mags cheap and easy to find just about anywhere.
It comes with a bare flat top Picatinny rail and no iron sights, so budget for a red dot or a set of backup irons before your first range trip. A compact red dot is the most popular setup on this gun. The free float M-LOK handguard also gives you room for a light or other accessories.
Freedom Ordnance recommends 115 grain FMJ as the bread and butter load, with select jacketed hollow points like 124 grain Sig Elite Performance also running well. Stick with brass-cased, jacketed ammunition and skip bare lead loads, which can cause fouling in the blowback system. Standard range ammo from Federal, PMC, Magtech, and similar brands is a safe bet.
The lower is threaded to accept mil-spec buffer tubes, so brace swaps are straightforward, though this model already comes with the SB Tactical SBA3 installed. For triggers, Freedom Ordnance advises keeping the factory group since it has extra disconnector engagement tuned for the 9mm blowback action. Most other AR-15 furniture and accessories bolt right on.
