Description

The Franklin Armory Binary OPS-11 is one of the more interesting piston-driven AR pistols to hit the shelf in a while. It runs Franklin's Osprey Defense short-stroke piston system, a self-regulating design that lets you shoot suppressed or unsuppressed without touching a gas block or swapping parts. That piston tucks up underneath a slimline M-LOK handguard with a built-in barrier stop, and the whole thing is chambered in 5.56 NATO with an 11-inch barrel. For folks who want a compact rig that stays cleaner and runs cooler than a typical overgassed carbine, this one is worth a serious look.

What Sets the OPS-11 Piston System Apart

The heart of this pistol is that Osprey piston. Instead of dumping hot gas back into the action like a standard direct impingement gun, the design vents excess gas forward and around the piston, which keeps the receiver area cleaner and the gun smoother through the cycle. Franklin also built it to need minimal piston maintenance across a normal barrel lifespan, so you spend more time shooting and less time scrubbing. Topping the barrel is Franklin's own Triumvir linear-compensating flash suppressor, which pushes muzzle blast and concussion forward and away from you.

Running the Binary OPS-11 Trigger

This is the Binary-equipped version, meaning it ships with Franklin Armory's BFSIII trigger. It's a three-position setup: Safe, Semi, and Binary. In Binary mode it fires one round on the pull and a second round on the release, which drastically cuts your split times and makes for some genuinely tight two-round pairs. If you decide you don't want that release shot, just flip the selector back to Semi while holding the trigger and the release round is canceled. Pull weight lands right around 4.5 pounds.

The OPS-11 feeds from a 30-round magazine and wears quality furniture throughout. Between the compact 11-inch barrel, the slick piston system, and the binary trigger, it's a range-day favorite that's equally at home as a do-it-all defensive platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the binary trigger on the OPS-11 work?

The OPS-11 comes with Franklin Armory's BFSIII trigger, which has three positions: Safe, Semi, and Binary. In Binary mode it fires one round when you pull the trigger and a second round when you release it, which tightens up your split times. If you don't want the release round to go off, simply move the selector back to Semi while holding the trigger and that round is canceled.

Can the Franklin Armory OPS-11 be shot suppressed?

Yes. The Osprey Defense piston system is self-regulating, so you can run it suppressed or unsuppressed without making any adjustments to the gas block or swapping parts. The design vents excess gas forward around the piston, which helps keep the action cleaner than a typical direct impingement setup when a suppressor is mounted.

What's the barrel twist and is the muzzle threaded?

The OPS-11 has an 11-inch barrel with a 1:7 right-hand twist, which stabilizes a wide range of 5.56 NATO bullet weights well. It ships with Franklin Armory's Triumvir linear-compensating flash suppressor installed on the muzzle, a device designed to direct blast and concussion forward and away from the shooter.

What makes the Osprey piston system different from a standard AR?

Instead of routing hot gas back into the receiver like a direct impingement gun, the Osprey short-stroke piston vents excess gas forward and around the piston. That keeps the action running cleaner and cooler, and Franklin built it to need little to no piston maintenance over a typical barrel lifespan. It's a smoother-shooting approach that handles a mix of 5.56 loads without fuss.
