Plenty of piston guns borrow ideas from military rifles. The BREN 2 MS is the real thing, a semi-auto version of the rifle CZ built from scratch for the Czech armed forces, and that heritage shows in every detail. The upper receiver is machined from aluminum, the lower is carbon fiber reinforced polymer, and the whole gun comes in at 5.86 pounds. That is remarkably light for a piston-driven 5.56 with a 14.17 inch cold hammer forged barrel, and it makes a real difference when you are running drills or just holding on target longer than you planned to.
The short-stroke gas piston system keeps carbon out of the action, so the gun stays cleaner and cooler through long range sessions. CZ ditched the reciprocating charging handle from the older 805 Bren in favor of a non-reciprocating one that stays parked forward until you need it, swaps to either side, and doubles as a forward assist. AR guys will feel right at home with the control layout too. The bolt catch and release are mirrored on both sides with an extra release tucked into the front of the trigger guard, and the safety and mag release are fully ambidextrous. Best of all, this 5.56 version feeds from standard AR-15 magazines, so your existing PMAGs and USGI mags are good to go.
The MS designation means modular, and CZ meant it. The forend can be swapped to different lengths, and the flush rear plate accepts an AR-style buffer tube or can be replaced entirely with CZ's factory folding adjustable stock if you decide to go the registered route down the line. Folding adjustable iron sights come installed on the full-length top rail, ready for a red dot or LPVO whenever you are. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28, so suppressors and muzzle devices bolt right up.
The 14.17 inch barrel is the sweet spot in the lineup, long enough to get real velocity out of 5.56 while keeping the overall package at 25.8 inches. If you want a piston gun with genuine military DNA instead of a range-day imitation, this is the one to handle.
Yes, the 5.56 versions of the BREN 2 MS feed from standard AR-15 pattern magazines, including USGI aluminum mags and Magpul PMAGs. This model ships with 30-round magazines from the factory. Worth noting that a few mag brands may not consistently trip the bolt catch on empty, so test your favorites before relying on them.
The pistol comes with a flush rear plate that has provisions for attaching an AR-style buffer tube, which opens the door to braces, cheek rests, and similar accessories. The entire rear plate can also be swapped for CZ's factory folding adjustable stock. That modularity is a big part of what makes this platform so popular.
The BREN 2 is a clean-sheet redesign, not just an update. CZ cut significant weight with an aluminum upper and carbon fiber reinforced polymer lower, replaced the reciprocating charging handle with a non-reciprocating one that doubles as a forward assist, and added AR-style ambidextrous bolt and mag controls. The result is lighter, smoother running, and far more familiar to anyone coming from the AR platform.
The muzzle is threaded in the common 1/2×28 pattern, so most 5.56-rated suppressors and muzzle devices will thread right on. The short-stroke gas piston system also tends to run cleaner suppressed than direct impingement guns, since it vents gas at the barrel instead of dumping it back into the action.
