The .17 WSM is a rimfire cartridge that behaves like it has something to prove. Push a 20 grain polymer tip near 3,000 feet per second and you get a trajectory flat enough to make prairie dogs regret their life choices out past 200 yards. Problem is, that cartridge runs at pressures no simple blowback action can safely handle. Franklin Armory solved it the right way by building the F17-L around a gas piston system and a rotating, locking bolt, the same basic approach you see in serious piston-driven centerfire rifles. The result is the world's first piston-operated rimfire AR, and it cycles this hot little round like it was born to.
The heart of this rifle is the slim Osprey Defense piston system, and the newer R2 setup regulates itself automatically whether you are running a suppressor or shooting bare muzzle. No fiddling with gas settings, just shoot. The 20 inch heavy profile barrel wears a 1:9 twist and comes threaded 1/2×28, so most common muzzle devices and rimfire-rated cans spin right on. Since it is piston driven, the action stays noticeably cleaner than a blowback rimfire, which matters with a cartridge as fast and hot as the .17 WSM.
Everything about the F17-L feels familiar if you have spent time behind an AR platform. Billet machined aluminum receivers finished in OD Green hardcoat anodizing, a free float M-LOK handguard with an integrated barrier stop, a full length top rail ready for your glass, and a custom tuned trigger that breaks clean. There are no sights included, which is fine, because a cartridge this flat deserves a proper scope anyway. This version feeds from a 10 round magazine, and one comes in the box. For varmint hunters, pest control work, or anyone who wants fast follow-up shots without the wait of a bolt gun, this thing is a genuine blast.
The .17 WSM runs at around 33,000 psi, which is far hotter than .22 LR or .17 HMR and way too much pressure for a standard blowback rimfire action. No, this rifle ships without sights. It has a full length Picatinny top rail, so mounting a scope or red dot is quick and easy. Given how flat the .17 WSM shoots, a quality magnified optic is the way to get the most out of this rifle, especially for varmint work at 150 to 250 yards.
It is a varmint and small pest cartridge through and through. With 20 grain loads pushing close to 3,000 fps, it shoots flatter and hits harder than .17 HMR, making it excellent on prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and similar critters out to around 200 yards and beyond. In the semi-auto F17-L, you also get fast follow-up shots that a bolt gun just cannot match.
