The FN High Power is not a clone or a tribute. It's a ground-up modernization of a design that served NATO militaries for over 80 years, refined with better ergonomics, a cleaner trigger, and a takedown system that doesn't require a trip to the armorer to field strip.
At the heart of it is a 4.7-inch cold hammer-forged barrel with a recessed target crown and polished feed ramp, which gives this pistol a mechanical accuracy advantage right out of the box. The trigger is single-action only, breaking at around 5 pounds with a crisp wall and clean reset that rewards anyone who puts in time behind it. The all-steel frame and slide add up to about 40 ounces, which sounds heavy on paper but translates to very manageable recoil and a pistol that genuinely shoots softer than you'd expect. The oversized ejection port keeps cycling reliable across a wide range of factory ammunition.
FN addressed the two biggest complaints about the original design. The extended beavertail and redesigned rounded hammer eliminate hammer bite for most hand sizes, even with a high grip. The driftable steel blackout sights sit in a dovetail cut that's compatible with FN 509 aftermarket options, so there's room to upgrade without much hassle. The PVD finish is a physical vapor deposition coating, not a standard blued or parkerized finish. It's notably hard, corrosion-resistant, and holds up well to holster wear and repeated handling. For a pistol you plan to shoot a lot or carry regularly, that matters. This black variant pairs the finish with a serrated slide and classic High Power silhouette that still turns heads at the range.
No, and that's intentional. FN deleted the magazine disconnect on the new High Power, which was a common complaint on the original design because it stiffened and degraded the trigger pull. The result is a noticeably cleaner, crisper single-action trigger. The pistol will fire with the magazine removed.
PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition, a coating process that bonds a hard, wear-resistant layer directly to the metal surface.
