Description

The FN 509 Midsize MRD was built around a smart idea: keep the 4-inch barrel for ballistics and sight radius, but shorten the grip to make the package easier to carry. The result is a pistol that sits right in the sweet spot between compact concealability and full-size shootability. At 26.5 oz and 7.4 inches overall, it's in the same size class as a Glock 19, but with FN's more contoured ergonomics and a feature set that goes beyond what most carry pistols offer at this price point.

The optics system is a big part of why people gravitate toward the MRD variant. FN's Low Profile Optics Mounting System uses adapter plates to support direct mounting of more than 10 different miniature red dot optics, including popular options like the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Vortex Viper, Venom, and Razor, Burris FastFire, and C-More STS II, among others. The system doesn't require milling the slide, so you're not stuck with one optic forever. The included co-witness iron sights stay usable with or without a dot mounted.

The barrel itself is cold hammer-forged stainless steel with a recessed target crown and polished chamber and feed ramp. These are legitimately premium features for a carry pistol. The frame is polymer with replaceable steel frame/slide rails, which gives you durability without excess weight. Grip texture is aggressive enough for a solid purchase in wet or sweaty conditions, and the two included interchangeable backstraps let you dial in the fit for your hand size. The flat-faced trigger is a notable improvement over earlier FN striker-fired designs, with a defined wall and short reset. Controls are fully ambidextrous, with both the slide stop lever and magazine release operable from either side.

One underrated perk: the 509 Midsize MRD is compatible with larger-capacity FN 509 magazines using a grip sleeve, so you can run 17- or 24-round mags if you want more capacity for range use or duty carry. The MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail up front means weapon lights and lasers mount without any fuss. The package also includes a soft pistol case and a cable lock, so you're covered from the moment it arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What red dot optics are compatible with the FN 509 Midsize MRD?

The FN Low Profile Optics Mounting System uses adapter plates to support more than 10 different miniature red dot optics without any slide milling. Confirmed compatible options include the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Vortex Razor, Viper, and Venom, Burris FastFire II and III, Docter Optic, and C-More STS II, among others. The plate-based system also means you're not permanently committed to one optic footprint if your preference changes down the road.

How does the FN 509 Midsize MRD compare in size to something like a Glock 19?

The two are very close in overall dimensions. The 509 Midsize MRD comes in at 7.4 inches long, 5.2 inches tall, and 1.35 inches wide, putting it right in the same ballpark as the Glock 19. The FN does have a slightly more contoured frame compared to the blockier Glock profile, which some people find more comfortable in the hand. At 26.5 oz, the weight is also comparable.

Can I use higher-capacity FN 509 magazines in the Midsize MRD?

Yes. The 509 Midsize MRD is compatible with the full FN 509 magazine lineup, including the 17-round and 24-round extended magazines, when used with the appropriate grip sleeve. The pistol ships standard with two flush-fitting 15-round magazines, which work great for carry, but the option to run higher-cap mags for range or duty use is a genuine versatility advantage.

Does the FN 509 Midsize MRD have a manual safety?

No, this model does not include a manual thumb safety. Safety is handled through the integrated trigger safety mechanism, similar to other striker-fired carry pistols. The 509 platform is also offered in a manual safety version if that's a requirement for you, so it's worth checking which variant fits your needs before purchasing.

Is the FN 509 Midsize MRD a good option for concealed carry?

It's a solid choice if you're comfortable carrying a pistol in the Glock 19 size range. The shortened grip compared to the full-size 509 makes it noticeably easier to conceal, while the 4-inch barrel preserves a longer sight radius and better ballistic performance than most compact carry guns offer. Carrying IWB works well for most body types, though like any optic-ready pistol, you'll want a holster specifically designed to accommodate the slide cut.

What kind of trigger does the FN 509 Midsize MRD have?

The 509 MRD uses a flat-faced striker-fired trigger with an integrated safety lever. It has an initial take-up, a defined wall, and a relatively short reset. The factory trigger pull is rated between 5.5 and 7.7 pounds. For those who want a crisper feel, Apex Tactical makes a well-regarded aftermarket trigger for the 509 platform.
