10mm Auto is not a cartridge you pick because you need convincing. It hits hard, it reaches out, and when you want serious stopping power in a semi-auto pistol, nothing else quite fills that role. The FN 510 MRD takes everything FN learned from the 509 series and scales it up to handle the demands of the big 10mm, giving you a full-size striker-fired pistol with the kind of modern feature set that most 10mm platforms still don't offer from the factory.
The heart of this pistol is a 4.1-inch cold hammer-forged stainless barrel with a target crown and polished feed ramp. That barrel has a 1:16 right-hand twist and is built for long-term accuracy and feeding reliability with a wide range of 10mm loads. The machined steel slide runs front and rear cocking serrations, a loaded chamber indicator, and a high-endurance conical striker. The trigger breaks clean at around 6 lbs with a short reset, which is right where you want it for a duty-class pistol.
The MRD designation is not just marketing. FN's Low-Profile Optics Mounting System supports an impressive range of footprints covering Trijicon RMR/SRO, Holosun 507/508, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Vortex Venom/Viper/Razor, Docter, C-More STS2, and Burris, among others. All four mounting plates ship in the box, so you can drop on your preferred red dot the same day without a trip to the shop. The driftable co-witness steel sights stay usable whether you're running a dot or not.
FN engineered the frame with recoil management in mind. The polymer grip frame uses a steel insert at the rear slide contact point to handle the constant pounding that 10mm generates, which is a detail that matters with this caliber. Grip texture is aggressive enough to hold through wet or sweaty conditions, and two interchangeable backstraps let you dial in the fit for your hand size. Controls are fully ambidextrous, with mirrored slide stop levers and magazine release on both sides. The MIL-STD-1913 rail up front gives you a solid mounting point for a weapon light.
This specific FDE variant ships with two 10-round magazines, four MRD mounting plates, two interchangeable backstraps, a manual, a lock, and a premium zippered case. It is built in FN's American facilities and carries MPN 66-101382.
The FN 510 MRD uses FN's Low-Profile Optics Mounting System, which supports a wide range of popular footprints including Trijicon RMR/SRO, Holosun 507/508, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Vortex Venom/Viper/Razor, Docter, C-More STS2, and Burris. Four mounting plates are included in the box, so there is no gunsmithing required to get a dot mounted. The co-witness height steel sights remain functional whether or not a red dot is installed.
This specific FDE model ships with two 10-round magazines. The FN 510 platform is also compatible with 15-round flush-fit magazines, which are the standard capacity for the MRD line in unrestricted areas. The 15-round magazines are available separately from FN if you want to run full capacity.
The MRD and Tactical share the same basic frame, ergonomics, and optics system, but the Tactical adds a threaded 4.71-inch barrel for suppressor or compensator use and ships with higher-capacity magazines. The 510 MRD has the shorter 4.1-inch non-threaded barrel and is generally a more straightforward, slightly more carry-friendly package. If you do not need a threaded barrel, the MRD delivers the same core shooting experience for less.
It is one of the better modern options for that role. The 10mm Auto cartridge delivers the penetration and energy needed for defense against large predators, and the FN 510 MRD puts that in a full-size platform with a red dot-ready slide, aggressive grip texture that holds through wet or dirty conditions, and a MIL-STD-1913 rail for a weapon light. The grip texture in particular was designed with exactly this kind of demanding environment in mind.
No, the FN 510 MRD does not have a manual external safety. It relies on the internal safety mechanisms built into the striker-fired action, which is consistent with most modern duty-grade striker-fired pistols. The trigger is not unusually light at around 6 lbs, which provides a reasonable margin against unintended discharge.
The FN 510 MRD handles standard SAAMI-spec 10mm Auto loads well, including 180-grain FMJ practice ammo and quality defensive hollow points in the 155-200 grain range. Like most modern semi-auto 10mm pistols, it is recommended to stick to factory-loaded ammunition within standard SAAMI pressure specs. Extremely hot handloads or non-standard overpressure loads are harder on any semi-auto 10mm platform and are best avoided.
