The Escort PS Compact is Hatsan's purpose-built answer to one of the most common problems in the field: getting a new or smaller-framed shooter into a gun that actually fits. The short length of pull and 22" barrel keep overall length at a very manageable 41 inches, and the whole package weighs right at 6 lbs. The gas-operated action is chambered for 3" 20-gauge shells and handles the full spectrum from 7/8 oz. light loads to 2 oz. magnums without needing to swap valves or fiddle with settings. That self-regulating SMART Valve Piston system is what makes it work so well for newer shooters who might be running a mixed bag of shells.
Fit is everything with a shotgun, especially for youth or smaller adults, and Escort put real thought into making this one adjustable rather than just short. The TrioPad rubber recoil pad includes spacers so you can dial in the length of pull as the shooter grows, and four included stock shims let you tweak drop and cast for a more natural mount. The anodized aircraft alloy receiver has an 11mm groove machined into the top for attaching optics, which is a nice touch at this price point. The chrome-plated Ni-Cr-Mo steel barrel is oxidation resistant inside and out, finished with a 7mm ventilated anti-glare rib and a brass bead up front.
The FAST Loading System is unique to the 20-gauge PS models and genuinely useful in the field. The loading switch doubles as both the carrier latch release for loading shells and the bolt release when the bolt locks back, so you can top off one-handed without dropping your shooting position. The tube magazine holds 4+1 rounds, or 2+1 with the included migratory plug installed for waterfowl seasons. Mounted sling studs come standard, and the synthetic stock and forend hold up to rain, mud, and the general abuse that a hunting gun sees on a regular basis. Five choke tubes are included covering the full range from Cylinder to Full, and the IC and Modified chokes are rated for steel shot.
It works well for both. The short length of pull makes it a natural fit for youth hunters and new shooters, but plenty of adults with a shorter draw length find it more comfortable than a standard-size shotgun. The adjustable LOP spacers and stock shims let you fine-tune the fit as needed, so it's not locked into one size.
The SMART Valve Piston is self-regulating and rated to cycle everything from 7/8 oz. target loads all the way up to 2 oz. 3" magnum shells without any manual adjustment. That said, like most gas guns, it tends to be happier with standard and heavier loads, especially when it's new. Running the first box or two of standard velocity loads through it during break-in is a good habit.
Yes, with the right choke. The Improved Cylinder and Modified choke tubes included with the gun are rated for steel shot. You'll want to stick to no tighter than Modified when running steel, and avoid the Full choke tube for steel loads entirely. That makes it a solid option for dove, duck pass shooting, and other waterfowl applications within range.
