There's a lot to like about a 20 gauge autoloader that doesn't get picky about ammo, and that's the whole idea behind the Escort PS. Hatsan's SMART Valve Piston is a self-regulating gas system that cycles everything from 7/8 oz target loads up to 2 oz magnums, mixing 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch shells in the same magazine without a hiccup. At roughly 6.2 pounds, this thing carries like a dream on a long walk to the blind, and the 20 gauge chambering keeps recoil comfortable enough for all-day shooting or younger hunters stepping up to their first semi-auto.
The 28 inch barrel is chrome plated inside and out for corrosion resistance and proof tested at the factory, topped with a 7mm checkered anti-glare vent rib and a brass bead up front. You get five choke tubes in the box, Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder, and the multi-choke system is rated for steel shot, so it's ready for the duck marsh right out of the case. The tube magazine holds 4+1, and a migratory plug is included to drop it to 2+1 for waterfowl season. There's also a magazine cut-off for single loading a different shell, plus Hatsan's FAST Loading System, which lets you top off the magazine one-handed and doubles as the bolt release.
Fit adjustments are where this gun punches above its class. Stock shims let you tweak drop and cast, and three buttpad spacers extend length of pull from the standard 14 1/5 inches, so you can dial it in whether you're layered up in December or shooting in a t-shirt. The Mossy Oak Bottomland synthetic stock and forend shrug off weather and blend into hardwoods and flooded timber, checkered grip panels keep your hands planted when things get wet, and sling studs come mounted from the factory. If you want to run a red dot for turkeys, the aluminum alloy receiver has an 11mm groove milled right in. For a workhorse 20 gauge that covers ducks, doves, squirrels, and spring gobblers, the PS gets a lot done.
Yes, and that's one of its strong suits. The SMART Valve Piston is a self-regulating gas system designed to run everything from 7/8 oz loads up to 2 oz magnums, and it will cycle mixed 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells loaded in the same magazine. That said, like most gas guns, give it a few boxes of shells to break in before betting your dove hunt on the lightest promo loads.
You can. The multi-choke system is rated for steel shot, and the gun ships with a migratory plug that limits capacity to 2+1 for waterfowl hunting. As with any shotgun, stick to the more open chokes like Modified or Improved Cylinder when running steel.
Yes. The alloy receiver has an 11mm dovetail groove machined into it, so you can attach optics using 11mm-compatible mounts or a groove-to-Picatinny adapter. That makes it a solid candidate for a turkey setup with a red dot, while the brass bead and vent rib handle wingshooting duty just fine.
It can, which is a nice touch at this price point. The included shim kit adjusts drop and cast so the gun points naturally for you, and three buttpad spacers let you extend the length of pull from the base 14 1/5 inches. That flexibility makes it easy to fit smaller-framed hunters or fine-tune things for heavy winter clothing.
