Hatsan's SMART Valve Piston self-regulates gas pressure, so the same gun that cycles 7/8 oz practice loads on Saturday will digest heavy waterfowl shells on Sunday. You can even mix light and heavy loads in the same magazine and it keeps running. The FAST Loading System is a nice touch too, letting you feed the magazine with one hand while the same switch doubles as the bolt release.
The 28" barrel is made from chromium nickel molybdenum steel with a black chrome finish that shrugs off moisture, and the ventilated rib with a metal bead gives you a clean sight picture on crossing birds. Up top, the black anodized aircraft alloy receiver has an 11mm groove cut in if you ever want to add an optic. The synthetic stock and forend are checkered for grip in wet weather, and Hatsan includes four shims so you can adjust drop and cast until the gun points where you look. A rubber recoil pad takes the edge off what little kick a gas-operated 20 gauge produces in the first place.
At 6.2 pounds with a 48" overall length, this is an easy gun to carry through a long day of upland hunting, and the lighter weight makes it a natural fit for smaller-framed hunters and anyone stepping down from a 12 gauge. Capacity is 4+1, with a migratory plug included to bring you down to 2+1 for bird seasons that require it. The multi-choke system is steel shot rated and ships with five tubes, Full through Cylinder, so one gun covers turkey blinds, dove fields, clays, and the duck marsh. It ships with five tubes: Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder. The multi-choke system is rated for steel shot, so you are set for waterfowl right out of the box. That range covers pretty much any bird hunting or clays scenario you can throw at it.
You can. The aircraft alloy receiver has an 11mm dovetail groove machined into the top, which accepts 11mm scope mounts and rings. That said, the vent rib and metal bead work great for wingshooting, so most folks only add glass if they plan to run slugs or turkey loads.
It is a solid pick. At 6.2 pounds in 20 gauge with a gas system and rubber recoil pad, felt recoil stays mild even with heavier loads. The four included stock shims let you adjust drop and cast for a proper fit, which makes a bigger difference in how a shotgun points than most people realize.
