Starting with the Springfield Armory Prodigy — already a well-regarded double-stack 1911-style pistol — Ed Brown's gunsmiths go through it piece by piece and bring it up to a standard you'd expect from a full custom build.
The defining feature of the Metal variant is the machined anodized aluminum grip module, finished in Ed Brown's exclusive Black Gen4 coating. This replaces the standard polymer grip and adds meaningful weight to the gun, bringing it to around 39 ounces — a substantial, planted feel that pays off during rapid strings of fire. The grip surface has a proprietary texture that locks in without being punishing on the hands, and the Ed Brown logo is machined right into the lower corner.
Under the hood is where this gun really earns its reputation. Ed Brown installs their Memory Groove beavertail grip safety, machined from barstock steel, which gets your hand high and deep into the gun for better recoil management and natural pointability. The ambidextrous thumb safeties are replaced with fully machined Ed Brown parts — extended enough to be practical, but not so wide they become a snag hazard. Fire control gets EDM-machined hammer and sear components along with a trigger job, delivering a crisp, smooth break that feels nothing like a stock production pistol.
The reliability package includes a hand-fitted machined extractor, barrel throating and feedramp polishing for flawless feeding, and a recessed barrel crown to protect the muzzle. The slide top is flattened and serrated, which naturally draws your eye toward the front sight. Every sharp exterior edge on the gun is dehorned by the same craftsmen who work on Ed Brown's own 1911 lineup. The optic-ready serrated slide means you can run a red dot without any additional machining. Two magazines ship with the gun — one 17-rounder and one 20-rounder — so you're covered for both flush and extended capacity right out of the box.

Where the standard Fueled Prodigy uses a polymer grip frame, the Metal version swaps in a machined anodized aluminum grip, bringing total weight up to around 39 ounces compared to approximately 33 ounces on the polymer model. That extra weight up front helps dampen felt recoil and keeps the muzzle flatter during fast follow-up shots, which is why many competition and duty shooters actually prefer the heavier setup.
Yes. The slide comes optic-ready from the factory, so you can mount a compatible red dot sight without needing additional milling or machining. The slide is also flattened and serrated on top, which helps channel your eye toward the front sight when shooting irons and gives the gun a clean, purposeful look.
The gun ships with two magazines — one 17-round flush-fit and one 20-round extended. Since the Fueled Prodigy is built on the Springfield Armory Prodigy platform, it uses the same double-stack 1911-pattern magazines. Standard Prodigy-compatible magazines should function correctly, though Ed Brown's own magazines are always the first recommendation for reliability.
It can do both, though the all-metal grip pushes the weight up to around 39 ounces, which is on the heavier side for everyday carry.
