There's a reason the Kobra Carry has been Ed Brown's best-selling model for over two decades straight. When it was introduced in 2000, it was genuinely groundbreaking: the first custom 1911 to combine the Bobtail frame, the Snakeskin texturing treatment, and an all-steel Commander-length package optimized specifically for concealed carry. A lot has changed in the gun industry since then, but the Kobra Carry has stayed on top because the fundamentals it got right back then still matter today.
The slide sits at 4.25 inches, which Ed Brown intentionally selected as the shortest length that still maintains the timing and reliability of a full 5-inch 1911 cycle. Go shorter and you start to see increased sensitivity to ammunition and more potential for malfunctions. The Bobtail housing is the other major piece of the equation: instead of rounding down to an Officer's-size frame and losing grip real estate and magazine capacity, Ed Brown rounded off just the rear of the mainspring housing. The result is a pistol that tucks under a cover garment significantly better than a Government-length 1911 while still feeding from a full 7-round single-stack magazine and filling out your hand naturally. The Gen4 Black coating protects the carbon steel frame and slide with a matte finish that resists glare and holds up to daily carry conditions.
The Snakeskin treatment on the forestrap, Bobtail housing, and slide serrations is one of those things you have to feel to fully appreciate. It's a directional, CNC-machined pattern that's smooth in one direction and grippy in the other, exactly where your hand needs to lock in. It doesn't chew up your hands or snag on cover garments the way aggressive checkering can, but it gives you real traction when it counts. The single-side carry-profile thumb safety keeps the left side of the frame clean and snag-free. Up front, an orange HDXR fiber optic front sight gives you a fast, high-visibility sight picture, paired with a fixed black rear. Additional shop touches include a recessed slide stop, heavy chamfer work on the frame, and a flush barrel with a recessed crown. These aren't checkboxes on a feature list — they're the kind of details that separate a true custom build from a production pistol.
Every Kobra Carry G4 ships from Ed Brown with a proper kit: two Ed Brown Performance Magazines with base pad kits, a pistol bag, lubricant, bushing wrench, grip screw wrench, owner's manual, and cable lock.
Ed Brown chose 4.25 inches specifically because it's the minimum slide length that preserves the reliable cycling characteristics of a full 5-inch 1911. Slides shorter than that tend to be more sensitive to ammunition selection and can introduce reliability issues that undermine the whole point of a carry gun. It's a deliberate engineering decision, not a compromise.
The Bobtail is Ed Brown's proprietary mainspring housing design that rounds off the rear butt of the grip frame. This trims the most common printing point on a full-size 1911 without shrinking down to an Officer's frame, so you keep the full grip length, full magazine capacity, and better hand-fill — just with a cleaner profile under a cover garment. It also shaves a bit of weight compared to a standard mainspring housing.
The Snakeskin treatment is a CNC-machined directional pattern applied to the forestrap, Bobtail housing, and slide of the pistol. It's engineered to be smooth when your hand slides up onto the grip but to bite in and lock your hand in place under recoil. Unlike aggressive checkering, it's gentle on bare skin and won't snag clothing, which matters a lot when you're carrying daily.
