There are plenty of 16-inch 5.56 ARs out there, but not many wear a barrel that started life at Knight's Armament. This DB15 is a collaboration between Diamondback Firearms and KAC, where Knight's supplies their proprietary chambered, rifled, and chrome-lined cold hammer forged barrel blank, and Diamondback handles the final profiling and assembly at their Florida facility. The result is a barrel with the kind of bore consistency and long service life that cold hammer forging is known for, plus chrome lining that shrugs off heat and wear during long range sessions. The 1:7 twist stabilizes everything from lightweight varmint loads to heavy 77 grain match ammo.
The mid-length gas system is a smart pairing with the 16-inch barrel, smoothing out the recoil impulse compared to carbine-length setups and being a little easier on parts over time. The gas block is dimpled and pinned in place, so it stays put. Up top you get an A3 flat-top forged aluminum upper, and the lower is machined from forged 7075-T6 aluminum with a hardcoat anodized finish. An A2 flash hider caps the threaded muzzle, and a mil-spec trigger keeps things familiar.
Diamondback did not cheap out on the touch points. The Magpul CTR collapsible stock locks up tight with no wobble, the MOE K2 grip gives you a more vertical, modern angle, and flip-up Magpul MBUS sights mean you can hit the range the day you pick it up. The 15-inch free float handguard uses an anti-rotation design with M-LOK slots along the sides and bottom, integrated QD sling mounts, and a full-length Picatinny top rail for optics, lights, or whatever else you want to bolt on.
At around six and a half pounds, this rifle handles well for range work, training classes, or a do-it-all home setup. It ships with a 30-round Magpul PMag, and everything about the build, from the KAC barrel to the Magpul furniture, reflects a rifle meant to run hard for years. American made, well thought out, and ready to shoot.
Knight's Armament produces the cold hammer forged barrel blank, which comes to Diamondback already chambered, rifled, and chrome-lined. Diamondback then profiles the barrel to its final contour and handles final assembly. So the bore itself, the part that matters most for accuracy and longevity, is pure KAC.
A 1:7 twist is on the faster end, which makes it great for stabilizing heavier bullets in the 62 to 77 grain range, including popular match loads. It still shoots common 55 grain ball ammo just fine for plinking and training. It also gives you the flexibility to safely run both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO pressure loads.
A mid-length system moves the gas port farther down the barrel than a carbine-length setup, which lowers port pressure and produces a noticeably softer, smoother recoil impulse. It also tends to be gentler on the bolt carrier group over thousands of rounds. For a 16-inch 5.56 barrel, it is widely considered the sweet spot.
Yes. The flat-top upper and full-length Picatinny rail on the handguard give you a continuous mounting surface for red dots, LPVOs, or magnifiers. The Magpul MBUS sights fold flat when not in use, so they work great as backups and can co-witness with most red dots on an absolute or lower-third setup.
