Description

Diamondback made a real splash when the SDR line launched, and the 9mm version answers a question a lot of wheelgun fans have been asking: why not run the same affordable ammo in your revolver that you feed your semi-auto? This one holds six rounds of 9mm, including +P loads, in a forged stainless steel frame with a 2 inch barrel, and it weighs in at just over 21 ounces unloaded. That is lighter than most all-steel snubs in its class, yet there is still enough heft to soak up recoil and keep follow-up shots on target.

What Sets the SDR 9mm Apart

The trigger is the headline here. Diamondback calls it match grade, and the double action pull is smooth and consistent with no stacking at the end, while single action breaks light and clean thanks to the exposed hammer. Up top you get a pinned orange fiber optic front sight paired with a dovetailed rear sight carrying two green fiber optic dots, giving you a genuine three-dot picture that beats the milled gutter sights found on most snub noses. The glass bead stainless finish keeps glare down and shrugs off the elements, and the rounded, snag-free contours are built with the draw in mind.

Smart Details for Loading and Cleaning

Since 9mm is a rimless cartridge, the SDR runs on moon clips, and Diamondback partnered with TK Custom to include three of them in the box. Load a clip ahead of time and you drop all six rounds in at once, then eject the empties as a single unit. Reloads do not get much quicker on a revolver. There is also a clever push button on the right side of the frame that lets the whole cylinder and crane assembly slide out for cleaning, no screwdriver required. The chambers are chamfered for easier loading, and the serrated push-button cylinder release is easy to hit under pressure.

Carrying the Diamondback SDR

The grip frame follows the familiar J-frame pattern, so the included Hogue rubber boot grip can be swapped for a huge range of aftermarket options, and plenty of existing holsters will fit. Made in the USA and shipped with a soft case, this is a carry revolver with modern thinking baked in from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Diamondback SDR 9mm require moon clips to function?

Yes, since 9mm is a rimless cartridge, the SDR uses moon clips for loading and extraction. Diamondback includes three TK Custom moon clips in the box, and the upside is fast reloads, since all six rounds go in and come out as one unit. Extra clips are inexpensive and easy to find if you want to keep several loaded.

Can the SDR 9mm handle +P ammunition?

It can. The SDR 9mm is rated for 9mm +P loads, so you can carry hotter defensive ammo with confidence. The forged stainless steel construction and 21-ounce weight help keep recoil manageable even with stouter loads.

Will J-frame grips and holsters fit the Diamondback SDR?

For the most part, yes. The SDR's grip frame was shaped to accept common Smith & Wesson J-frame grips, so swapping out the factory Hogue rubber grip is simple. Many J-frame holsters will also work, though molded Kydex options made for five-shot guns may need a model-specific fit due to the slightly wider six-shot cylinder.

How do you remove the cylinder for cleaning?

There is a spring-loaded button on the right side of the frame just above the trigger guard. With the cylinder swung open, press the button and the entire cylinder and crane assembly slides forward out of the frame in one piece. It makes deep cleaning far easier than the yoke screw setup found on most revolvers, and no tools are needed.
