The DY9Z lands in a category that's tough to get right: small enough for real concealed carry, but with enough grip, barrel length, and capacity to be worth training with. At 6.5 inches long, 1.1 inches wide, and weighing just 1.25 pounds unloaded, it earns its micro-compact classification. But the 3.5-inch barrel gives it a meaningful edge over the smallest subcompacts, and 15+1 capacity puts it well ahead of the typical micro-pistol offering.
The slide is forged from 4140 steel and finished in black Melonite, which does a solid job resisting corrosion and wear over time. The frame is injection-molded polymer with three interchangeable backstraps (S, M, L) so you can dial in the grip to fit your hand rather than just dealing with whatever the factory gave you. There's also a reversible magazine release and an integrated accessory rail for a light or laser. The trigger breaks cleanly at around 5 pounds with a well-defined wall, which is a genuinely nice feature on a pistol at this size and price point.
The slide comes with a direct RMSc optic cut, meaning no adapter plate needed to mount a compact red dot. That's the right way to do it, and it keeps the overall profile lower when you do add an optic. If you're running it iron-only, the white dot front and U-notch rear get the job done for quick target acquisition. The sight cuts are also compatible with Glock 43X aftermarket options, which opens up the aftermarket a bit.
Magazine compatibility is worth knowing about: the DY9Z uses a metal magazine and a proprietary metal magazine catch, and it works with Glock 43X-compatible magazines for a flush fit. The pistol ships with one 15-round metal magazine. The blue frame on this particular variant is a dyed polymer color produced at Derya's facility, paired with the standard black Melonite slide for a two-tone look that's genuinely sharp without being over the top.
The DY9Z slide uses an RMSc footprint cut directly into the slide, so no adapter plate is required. This footprint is compatible with a wide range of compact red dots designed for the RMSc standard. It's the same cut found on popular micro-compact platforms, so the aftermarket selection is solid.
The DY9Z ships with one proprietary Derya 15-round metal magazine and uses a metal magazine catch. It's also compatible with magazines designed for the Glock 43X for a flush fit. Derya recommends sticking with their dedicated magazine or Glock 43X OEM mags for best reliability, as some third-party options may cause increased wear on the metal catch.
It's a genuinely strong choice. The interchangeable backstraps help new owners find a grip that fits, the trigger is clean and predictable, and the combination of micro-compact size with 15+1 capacity means you can carry it daily and train with the same gun without feeling undergunned. The optic-ready slide also leaves room to grow into a red dot later.
The DY9Z is compatible with standard +P 9mm loads for defensive use. For best reliability, Derya recommends ammunition running at least 1,100 FPS muzzle velocity. Subsonic loads under 1,000 FPS may not cycle the slide consistently, so they're not ideal for carry use in this platform.
Running 200 to 500 rounds through the DY9Z during break-in is a reasonable approach, using a mix of FMJ and your chosen defensive hollow point. This lets the action smooth out and gives you a chance to verify your carry ammo feeds and ejects reliably before you depend on it.
The blue color is a dyed polymer frame produced at Derya's injection molding facility, not a spray-on coating or Cerakote over the frame. The slide retains the standard black Melonite finish for corrosion resistance, creating the two-tone blue and black appearance. Because the color is part of the polymer formula itself, it won't peel or chip the way an applied finish can.
