Description

When Diamondback introduced the original DB9 back in 2011, it helped kick off the whole single-stack pocket 9mm craze. More than a decade of refinement later, the Gen IV is the best version of that idea yet. At just 5.73 inches long, 4 inches tall with a flush magazine, and only 0.89 inches at its widest point, this pistol genuinely disappears in a pocket, IWB holster, or bag. The 13.4-ounce empty weight makes it easy to forget you're carrying it, right up until you need it.

What Makes the DB9 Gen IV Different from Earlier Models

The Gen IV brought some meaningful upgrades over previous generations. The slide now features front and rear cocking serrations that are wider and more tactile, making manipulation much easier on a gun this small. A slide stop was added, which earlier DB9s didn't have. The barrel is also rated for +P ammunition, opening up a wider range of defensive loads. The three-dot sights use a U-notch rear with white dots and an orange front dot, and they happen to be Glock 42/43 compatible, so aftermarket night sight options are plentiful if you ever want to go that route.

DB9 Gen IV Carry Performance and Handling

The striker-fired action runs double-action-only with a short-reset trigger and a roughly 5.5 lb pull. A mechanical firing pin block provides passive safety without requiring any manual levers or switches. The all-steel captured recoil system handles the energy of a 9mm in a package this light reasonably well, though like any micro-9, expect a snappier feel than a full-size gun. The beavertail helps keep slide bite out of the equation. The aggressive grip texture front and rear does solid work keeping things secure even with a compressed grip. This FDE frame and black nitride slide combination is one of the sharper-looking variants in the Gen IV lineup, and the corrosion-resistant coating on the slide, barrel, and internal components is built to hold up over years of carry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Diamondback DB9 Gen IV rated for +P ammunition?

Yes, the Gen IV is rated for standard 9mm +P loads, which is a notable upgrade from earlier DB9 generations. The barrel is even marked +P from the factory. Just stick to SAAMI-spec +P loads and avoid +P+ ammunition, which exceeds safe pressure limits for this pistol.

Will this pistol actually fit in a pocket?

With a flush magazine installed, the DB9 Gen IV is 5.73 inches long, 4 inches tall, and under 0.9 inches wide. With the right pants or jacket pocket, it genuinely fits. A dedicated pocket holster is recommended to keep it properly oriented and to protect the trigger.

Are the sights on the DB9 Gen IV replaceable?

They are, and this is one of the underrated perks of the Gen IV platform. The sights are compatible with Glock 42 and Glock 43 aftermarket sights, which means there's a solid selection of night sights and upgraded options available. The factory three-dot setup is serviceable on its own, but it's good to know you're not locked in.

How does the DB9 Gen IV compare in size to the Glock 43?

The DB9 is close to the G43 in length and height, but it's notably thinner overall at only 0.89 inches wide versus the Glock 43's wider profile. For pure pocket or deep concealment carry where every fraction of an inch matters, the DB9 has a real edge in the slimness department.

Does the DB9 Gen IV have a slide lock?

Yes, a slide stop was added with the Gen IV update, which was a common complaint about earlier DB9 models that lacked one. This lets the slide lock back on an empty magazine and makes administrative handling and reloads more straightforward.

What kind of warranty does Diamondback offer on the DB9 Gen IV?

Diamondback backs the DB9 Gen IV with a limited lifetime warranty. You'll want to hold onto your proof of purchase if warranty service is ever needed, and the warranty covers manufacturer defects under normal use with appropriate ammunition.
