Machined from aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum and wrapped in a Mil-Spec Flat Dark Earth hard-coat anodized finish, the 12.25-inch two-piece design gives you Mil-Spec 1913 Picatinny rails on all four sides and a top rail that runs uninterrupted from the receiver forward, so your optics and backup sights line up without a gap.
The heart of this rail is Daniel Defense's patented Bolt-Up System. A hardened 4140 steel barrel nut torques to 55 ft-lbs on standard AR-15, M4, and M16 pattern uppers, then the rail clamps to the barrel nut with Grade 8 fasteners for a connection that stays put. Yes, the Bolt-Up System barrel nut is designed for standard AR-15, M4, and M16 pattern upper receivers and barrels. It's meant to be used with a low-profile gas block, specifically the MK12 style, since the rail free floats the barrel. As long as your upper is Mil-Spec, you're in good shape.
You'll need the Daniel Defense Bolt-Up System barrel nut wrench, which is a proprietary spanner that pairs with a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench. Daniel Defense calls for torquing the barrel nut to 55 ft-lbs. Note that this wrench is sold separately and a standard armorer's wrench won't fit the DD barrel nut.
The Flat Dark Earth finish is the color builders want for an authentic Block 2 M4A1 clone, so demand stays high and stock can be tight. Beyond looks, the FDE anodizing is the same Mil-Spec hard-coat process as the black version, so durability is identical. It comes down to matching a specific SOCOM-pattern build.
