Description

Not many handguards can say they were designed at the request of United States Special Operations Command, but the Daniel Defense RIS II can. Built for the SOPMOD II program, this 12.25" two-piece rail was engineered to free-float an M203 grenade launcher without extra parts, and that same rigid, no-nonsense construction is exactly why it earned a reputation as one of the toughest free-float systems you can bolt onto an AR-pattern rifle. The FSP version is the one you want if your carbine still wears its factory A2 front sight post.

What the FSP Cutout on the M4A1 RIS II Does

FSP stands for Front Sight Post, and the difference is right there in the top rail. Instead of forcing you to strip off your fixed front sight base, this rail is machined with a cutout that slides right over a standard A2 gas block and front sight tower on a carbine-length gas system. That makes it the correct pick for clone builds and any rifle keeping its original sight tower. At around 17.1 ounces it comes in a touch lighter than the non-FSP model thanks to that sight post relief.

Rails, Rigidity, and the Bolt-Up System

You get full-length MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rails at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, so there's plenty of room for lights, lasers, foregrips, backup irons, and optics. The rail attaches using Daniel Defense's proven six-bolt Bolt-Up barrel nut system with Grade 8 mil-spec fasteners, which is what gives it that rock-solid, no-flex feel once it's torqued down. The top rail is designed to mate continuously with the upper receiver rail for one uninterrupted sighting plane.

Getting the M4A1 FSP RIS II Set Up Right

A couple of build notes worth knowing up front. The RIS II is meant to run with a low-profile gas block, and Daniel Defense pairs it with their MK12 Low Profile Gas Block for true clone-correct setups. The Type III hard-coat anodized Flat Dark Earth finish holds up to hard use and abuse, and the whole package is backed by Daniel Defense's satisfaction guarantee. Machined from aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum, this is a lifetime piece of hardware for a serious build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the FSP RIS II and the standard M4A1 RIS II?

The FSP version has a cutout machined into the top rail that clears a standard A2 gas block and fixed front sight tower on a carbine-length gas system. The standard RIS II is meant for setups without a fixed front sight post. If your rifle is keeping its factory front sight, the FSP is the one you want.

Do I need a special gas block for the Daniel Defense RIS II?

The RIS II is designed to run with a low-profile gas block, and Daniel Defense recommends their MK12 Low Profile Gas Block for a true clone-correct build. That said, the FSP model is built specifically to fit over a standard A2 front sight base, so if you're keeping that fixed sight tower you're already set up for it.

Does the M4A1 FSP RIS II come with everything I need to install it?

Yes. It ships with all the required mounting hardware, printed instructions, three snap-on polymer rail covers, and the wrench needed for the Bolt-Up barrel nut system. You'll want basic AR armorer's tools on hand, but the rail-specific hardware is all included.

Will this RIS II handguard fit a standard AR-15 upper?

It's built around mil-spec AR-15 upper receivers with a carbine-length gas system and an A2 front sight gas block. The six-bolt Bolt-Up system attaches it securely to the barrel nut, and the top rail mates continuously with the receiver rail for one uninterrupted sighting plane.
