The 28 gauge has been having a moment in the turkey woods, and CVA clearly took notice. The Scout Spur is their first shotgun in the gauge, and they built it the right way. It rides on the same trusted single-shot break action the Scout line is known for, then adds the ergonomic upgrades that made the Spur models popular with turkey hunters who like to run and gun light without giving up pattern performance.
The 22-inch blued steel barrel is chambered for 2-3/4 inch shells and threaded on the widely available Invector pattern, so aftermarket choke options are everywhere. Out of the box you get a TruLock XX-Full turkey choke designed to throw the kind of dense patterns that make TSS loads so deadly on longbeards. Up top, a factory-installed Picatinny rail means mounting a red dot takes minutes instead of a trip to the gunsmith, which matters when tight sub-gauge patterns leave little room for a shotgun that shoots off-center.
Stock fit gets real attention here. Length of pull adjusts with a removable 1-inch spacer, and comb height adjusts with two included cheek risers in quarter-inch and half-inch heights, so you can line your eye up behind an optic without craning your neck. A thick CrushZone recoil pad takes the sting out of stout turkey loads, and molded texturing on the grip and forend keeps things secure when spring weather turns wet. The reversible hammer spur works for left or right-handed hunters, and an external hammer keeps the manual of arms about as simple as it gets.
The OD Green synthetic stock over a blued receiver and barrel gives it a clean, no-nonsense look that blends into the spring woods. At roughly six pounds with a compact overall length, it carries easy over a shoulder all morning and points fast when a gobbler hangs up at the edge of range. Yes, and it's one of the best things about this gun. The receiver comes with a factory-installed Picatinny rail, so most red dots bolt right on with no drilling or gunsmithing. With the tight patterns an XX-Full choke throws, a red dot is a smart addition to make sure your point of aim matches your point of impact.
With modern TSS loads, absolutely. Tungsten shot carries far more pellets per ounce than lead, so a 28 gauge with the included XX-Full turkey choke can deliver patterns that rival much bigger guns at typical turkey distances. You get that performance with a lighter gun and noticeably less recoil.
The barrel is threaded on the Invector choke pattern, one of the most common thread systems out there. That means aftermarket choke tubes are easy to find if you want to experiment beyond the included TruLock XX-Full turkey choke, or open things up for small game.
