If you've been fighting inconsistent ignition or messy blowback with 209 shotgun primers, the CVA AC1737 QRBP VariFlame Conversion Kit is the fix a lot of Accura and Optima owners swear by. Instead of a shotshell primer, this system uses large rifle primers pressed into reusable aluminum adapters, which burn hotter and more evenly. That translates to tighter velocity spreads and better downrange accuracy, especially when you're stretching things out with heavy Blackhorn 209 charges.
The VariFlame design is the work of inventor Cecil Epps, and CVA built it into their higher-end rifles for a reason. Large rifle primers deliver a cleaner, more complete burn than a 209, which means less debris fouling the flash hole and far less of that annoying primer blowback. Folks who couldn't get their Accura MR-X or LR-X to run clean with 209s often report the switch flat-out solved the problem, with groups shrinking and no more hunting down mag primers.
This isn't just a breech plug. The kit includes the QRBP itself, a CVA priming tool for seating primers into the adapters, an aluminum punch to pop the spent primers back out, a loading press, and ten reusable VariFlame adapters. Because those adapters are made to be used over and over, you're not buying consumables every range trip. Once the quick-release breech plug is fitted, you can install and remove it by hand with no tools.
CVA recommends this kit for the Accura LR-X, Accura MR-X, Accura PR, Accura MR, all Optima models, and all Wolf models, with best results in .45 and .50 caliber rifles built in 2010 or newer. They're built to be reused. You press a fresh large rifle primer into the adapter with the included priming tool, fire, then use the aluminum punch to pop the spent primer back out. The kit comes with ten adapters so you can keep a rotation going at the range or in the field.
CVA generally recommends standard large rifle primers for the best overall performance, though magnum primers will work too. Popular choices like CCI and Federal rifle primers have a solid track record in these rifles. Standard primers are usually the safe bet for consistency.
