Every time you separate your upper and lower, that steel front takedown pin is grinding right on the aluminum of your receiver. Do it enough times and the through-hole starts to open up and elongate, leaving you with a sloppy, wobbly fit. The Cross Armory Pin Pal fixes that problem by putting a lubricated captive bearing between the pin and the receiver, so the wear happens on a replaceable part instead of your expensive upper.
The idea here is simple but smart. Instead of a steel pin bearing directly on soft aluminum, the Pin Pal transfers that rotational wear onto a Mil-Spec captive bearing made from oil-infused, porous metal with increased iron content for extra strength and shock resistance. The pin and locking nut are machined from 4140 ordnance steel with a black melonite hard coat, so the parts doing the work are tough enough to handle repeated cycles. The end result is an AR that stays as tight as the day it left the factory.
You won't need a gunsmith or special tools for this one. After separating your receivers, you remove the nut, use the Pin Pal pin to seat the captive bearing into the upper, and gently tap it home with a nylon mallet. Keep the metal hammers in the drawer for this job, since a soft mallet is all it takes and it protects the part. Once the receivers line up, drop the pin in with the logo facing out on the right side, get it flush, and snug down the nut.
