The M5 is not just another Colt AR with a shorter barrel. This is the platform Colt redesigned from the ground up for military and law enforcement contracts, and the 10.3 inch semi-auto version gives you that same architecture in SBR form. The upper and lower receivers were reworked with fully ambidextrous controls, meaning the safety, magazine release, bolt release, and charging handle all work the same from either side. Left-handed folks finally get a factory Colt that doesn't treat them like an afterthought, and right-handed users pick up faster, cleaner manipulations too.
The heart of this gun is the 10.3 inch heavy profile barrel, fully free floated inside Colt's one-piece M-LOK rail system. The rail mates to the upper receiver in a way that keeps everything rigid, so your zero stays put and your accessories don't wander. A 1 in 7 twist stabilizes the heavier 5.56 NATO loads that make the most sense out of a short barrel, and the proven carbine-length gas system keeps the gun running smoothly without beating itself up. It's the kind of setup that used to require sending an upper off to a custom shop, straight from the factory instead.
Colt didn't skimp on the furniture either. The Magpul CTR stock locks up tight on the buffer tube with its friction lock, the A2 grip is a familiar classic, and Troy flip-up sights front and rear mean you can zero and shoot the day it comes home, no optic required. A 30 round magazine is included, and the M-LOK handguard leaves you plenty of real estate for lights, lasers, or hand stops down the road.
A 10.3 inch 5.56 is about as handy as this platform gets while still delivering real rifle performance. For a compact home setup, a truck gun build, or just owning a genuine piece of the M5 program, this Colt earns its spot in the safe.
The M5 uses redesigned upper and lower receivers rather than standard mil-spec forgings. The biggest changes are fully ambidextrous controls on the lower, an enhanced upper that mates rigidly with Colt's one-piece free float M-LOK rail, and a free-floated heavy barrel. It was developed for military and law enforcement programs before Colt offered it to consumers.
It ships with Troy flip-up front and rear sights already installed, so you can zero it and shoot right away. The full-length top rail also gives you plenty of room to add a red dot or LPVO later, and the flip-ups fold down to work as backups.
The 1 in 7 twist rate is built to stabilize heavier 5.56 bullets, and 62 to 77 grain loads tend to be the sweet spot for short barrels like this. Heavier bonded or match loads hold their performance better at the lower velocities a 10.3 inch barrel produces. Standard 55 grain range ammo will run fine for practice.
Yes. The M5 feeds from standard AR-15 pattern magazines, and one 30 rounder comes in the box. The handguard is true M-LOK, so lights, hand stops, sling mounts, and other M-LOK accessories bolt right on without adapters.
