Colt built this one on a heavy-duty stainless steel frame with a full six-round cylinder of .357 Magnum, then trimmed the barrel to 2 inches and bobbed the hammer so nothing catches on the draw. The result is a true double action only carry revolver that runs full-power magnum loads all day without complaint.
At 26 ounces, this revolver hits a sweet spot. It's heavy enough that .357 Magnum stays manageable, yet light enough to disappear under an untucked shirt in a decent holster. The Hogue overmolded rubber grip sits rearward on the frame to help tame recoil, and it fills the hand better than the skinny wood panels on old-school snubs. Up front you get a brass bead sight paired with an integral notch rear, a classic setup that's fast to pick up at defensive distances and has zero parts to work loose. And since it's chambered in .357 Magnum, you can train with softer-shooting .38 Special and load up magnums when it counts.
The trigger is where this gun separates itself from the pack. Colt's linear leaf spring action gives the King Cobra a smooth, consistent double action pull that measures noticeably lighter than most competing snubs, and with the bobbed hammer there's nothing to think about beyond a clean press. Brushed stainless construction means sweat and holster wear aren't a concern, and the whole package measures just 7 inches end to end. Yes. Like any revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, it happily runs .38 Special and .38 Special +P. That makes range practice a lot more pleasant, and plenty of owners carry quality .38 +P defensive loads while saving full-house magnums for when they want them.
This is the Carry DAO version, so Colt bobbed the hammer to eliminate snag points on the draw from concealment. The gun fires in double action only, meaning every trigger pull is the same long, smooth stroke. There's no single action mode, which is by design for a dedicated carry revolver.
The cylinder is slightly wider than a typical five-shot J-frame, but the difference is small, roughly an eighth of an inch. Most people find it conceals fine under an untucked shirt in a good holster, and the extra round plus the steel frame's recoil control are worth the trade for many folks.
Most people who carry this gun consider the weight a feature, not a drawback. All-steel construction takes the sting out of .357 Magnum in a way airweight snubs simply can't, so you'll practice more with the loads you carry. With a quality belt and holster, 26 ounces carries comfortably all day.
