Description

The Gold Cup name has been on winners' benches since the 1950s, and this two-tone Trophy keeps that streak alive with a build that means business. Colt fits a 5-inch National Match stainless barrel to a Series 70 platform, then tops the slide with a red fiber optic front sight and a Bomar-style fully adjustable rear. That sight setup is the classic bullseye recipe: a bright front dot your eye finds fast, and a rear you can dial in for whatever load you are running. The wide three-hole aluminum trigger breaks clean in the 4 to 6 pound range, which is exactly what you want when you are trying to stack rounds in the ten ring.

Built Like a Competition 1911 Should Be

Colt updated the Gold Cup Trophy with features that used to require a trip to a custom shop. You get 25 LPI checkering on the front and back strap, an undercut trigger guard for a high grip, an upswept beavertail grip safety with memory bump, and a beveled magwell that makes reloads smooth under a timer. The blue G10 grips are checkered aggressively enough to lock your hand in place, and they look fantastic against the blued frame and brushed stainless slide. At around 38 ounces unloaded, the full-size steel frame soaks up .45 ACP recoil and lets you get back on target quickly.

Where the Gold Cup Trophy Earns Its Keep

This pistol was made for bullseye matches, action pistol competition, and serious range days, but there is nothing stopping it from pulling double duty as a nightstand gun. It feeds from a single-stack 8-round magazine, runs a single-action trigger the way John Browning intended, and carries the kind of fit you expect from a match-grade Colt. The barrel bushing is snug, the slide-to-frame fit is tight, and accuracy reflects it.

If you have been wanting a 1911 that shoots as good as its reputation, this one belongs on your short list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Colt Gold Cup Trophy a Series 70 or Series 80?

This version is built on the Series 70 platform, which means no firing pin block in the trigger path. That is a big part of why the trigger feels so clean, typically breaking between 4 and 6 pounds with minimal creep. It is one of the main reasons competitive 1911 fans gravitate toward this model.

What sights come on the Gold Cup Trophy two-tone?

It wears a red fiber optic front post paired with a Bomar-style fully adjustable rear sight. You can dial in windage and elevation for your preferred load, which matters a lot when you are shooting bullseye or ringing steel at distance. The fiber optic front is quick to pick up in most lighting.

Is this pistol just for competition, or can it handle defensive use?

It was designed with match shooting in mind, but it runs standard .45 ACP defensive loads without complaint. The full-size steel frame, beavertail grip safety, and beveled magwell work just as well for home defense as they do on the firing line. Plenty of owners treat it as a do-everything full-size 1911.

Will the Gold Cup Trophy accept standard 1911 magazines?

Yes, it ships with one 8-round single-stack magazine and feeds fine from quality aftermarket .45 ACP 1911 mags. The beveled magazine well makes swaps quick and forgiving. If you plan to compete, picking up a few extra magazines is a smart move.
