This 9mm upper packs the entire action and recoil assembly up inside the receiver using their Compact Action and Radial Delayed Blowback system, which means the whole thing runs shorter and less bulky than a traditional 9mm AR pistol. The operating system here is the star. That radial delayed blowback design uses a fixed ejector and a lighter bolt carrier, and the payoff is noticeably softer felt recoil plus reliable cycling across a wide spread of 9mm loads, whether you're feeding it supersonic range ammo or heavier subsonic stuff. Bolt manipulation runs off a forward, non-reciprocating charging handle on the left side, so you can rack it without breaking your grip or coming off target. No, and that's the whole point of the design. CMMG's Compact Action houses the recoil springs and guide rods inside the upper receiver itself, so there's no buffer tube hanging off the back of the lower. That frees you up to run a folding stock or brace and build something far more compact than a standard 9mm AR pistol.
It's compatible with Mk4 and standard AR15 lower receivers as long as you use CMMG's 9AR conversion magazines. It also mates directly to MkGs and Mk17 lower groups. The included 1913 Picatinny rail end plate installs in place of the lower's buffer tube for attaching a sling, brace, or stock.
The charging handle sits on the left side and is forward mounted. It's non-reciprocating, meaning it stays put while the gun cycles, so it won't chew up your support hand or knock your grip loose. The forward position lets you rack the bolt without coming off target.
