The Dissent MK4 upper is CMMG's answer to building a genuinely compact AR without giving up the reliability of direct impingement. What sets it apart is the Compact Action, a patent-pending design that tucks the whole action and recoil assembly inside the upper receiver. That means no buffer tube hanging off the back of your lower, so the overall package ends up noticeably shorter and less bulky than a standard AR pistol running the same barrel length. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO with a 10.5" barrel, it splits the difference nicely between the ultra-short builds and a full carbine, giving you better ballistics while keeping things maneuverable.
The barrel is 4140 chrome moly with a 1:7 twist, so it stabilizes everything from light varmint loads up to heavier match bullets. Up front you get CMMG's ZEROED Blast Compensator on a 1/2×28 thread to tame muzzle rise, and the pistol-length gas port feeds a low-profile adjustable gas block. That adjustable block is a real perk if you plan to run a suppressor or want to fine-tune the system to your ammo, letting you dial gas in so the action cycles clean without over-gassing.
This unit ships with a forward-mounted, non-reciprocating side charging handle set up on the left side, which lets you cycle the bolt without breaking your firing grip or coming off target. The 9.6" proprietary M-LOK handguard wraps the barrel and gas block with slots on the sides and bottom plus a full-length top Picatinny rail, so mounting optics, lights, and a sling is straightforward.
Every Dissent upper includes a 1913 Picatinny rail end plate that goes where a buffer tube normally would, opening up folding stock and brace options for your build. It drops onto CMMG's Mk4 lowers or standard mil-spec AR-15 lowers, and the whole thing is finished in Armor Black Cerakote. CMMG backs it with their Lifetime Quality Guarantee against material and workmanship defects.
The Dissent MK4 upper mounts on CMMG's own Mk4 lower receivers as well as standard mil-spec AR-15 lowers. Because the action and recoil system live entirely in the upper, you do not use a buffer tube on the lower. The included 1913 Picatinny end plate installs where the buffer tube normally goes.
Yes, and it is well suited for it. The low-profile adjustable gas block lets you tune the gas system down for suppressed shooting so the action cycles cleanly without excess gas blowback. The barrel is threaded 1/2×28, so most common 5.56 suppressors and muzzle devices will thread right on.
Direct impingement Dissent models ship with the forward non-reciprocating charging handle on the left side as standard. This lets right-handed users cycle the bolt without moving the firing hand off the grip. CMMG also offers right-side charging handles separately if you prefer to swap it.
The Dissent uses CMMG's patent-pending Compact Action that houses the whole recoil assembly inside the upper receiver, eliminating the receiver extension, buffer, and buffer spring. That removes the length a traditional buffer tube adds behind the receiver. The result is a noticeably more compact package with the same 10.5" barrel.
