The CMMG Dissent Mk4 upper takes the .22 ARC cartridge and pairs it with one of the more interesting AR designs to come along in a while. What sets the Dissent apart is CMMG's patent-pending direct impingement Compact Action, which packs the entire action and recoil assembly up inside the upper receiver. That means no buffer tube sticking out the back, so you get a shorter, less bulky package than a traditional AR while keeping the AR-15 manual of arms you already know. Bolt this onto any mil-spec compatible lower and you're ready to run.
The .22 ARC, or Advanced Rifle Cartridge, is Hornady's answer to squeezing long-range .22-caliber performance out of the AR-15 platform. Built off the 6mm ARC and sharing the 6.5 Grendel case head, it runs heavy, high-BC bullets that stay flatter and buck the wind better than typical .22 loads. The result is performance that rivals the .22-250 Remington, but in a package that feeds from standard AR-15 lowers. The 16.1-inch barrel wears a 1:7 twist, which is exactly what these long, aerodynamic bullets need to stabilize, so you're set up for varmint work or ringing steel at distance.
The forward non-reciprocating side charger is a genuinely nice touch. It lets you work the bolt quickly without pulling off target, and on direct impingement models it ships with a left-side charger that's reversible if you'd rather run it on the right. Up front is a 15-inch M-LOK handguard with a top Picatinny rail, giving you plenty of room for optics, lights, bipods, or whatever your setup calls for. The adjustable gas block is worth calling out too, since it lets you tune the gas system to your ammo or a suppressor, so it's never over or under gassed.
This one wears CMMG's Charcoal Green Cerakote, one of their seven finish options, and it also includes a 1913 Picatinny rear end plate so you can add a sling mount, folding stock, or brace to your lower.
