Description

The Citadel Boss 25 is an AR-style, magazine-fed 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun built by Legacy Sports International. This version wears a 20" matte black steel barrel with a 3" chamber, handles both 2 3/4" and 3" shells, and runs a gas-operated action that helps tame felt recoil compared to a comparable pump. The lower receiver is built from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer and the upper is aluminum, keeping overall weight right around 8 lbs while keeping the whole package tough enough to put up with regular range use and rough handling.

What Makes the Boss 25 Stand Out at the Range

The biggest thing separating the Boss 25 from a conventional shotgun is how it handles. If you already shoot ARs, the manual of arms transfers over almost immediately. You get a pistol grip that is actually compatible with standard AR-15 grips if you ever want to swap it, a stock with an adjustable cheek piece for getting a proper sight picture, and a rubber recoil pad on the buttstock. The forend features a hybrid rail system with Picatinny, M-Lok, and Keymod attachment points, so mounting a light, foregrip, or other accessories is straightforward. On top of the receiver, a full-length Picatinny rail gives you a solid platform for red dots, magnified optics, or whatever else you want to run. Flip-up adjustable front and rear sights come installed and ready to go.

Citadel Boss 25 Choke System and Ammo Compatibility

Five screw-in choke tubes are included, covering a range from cylinder to full, which is genuinely uncommon for a defensive-style shotgun. That gives the Boss 25 real flexibility across home defense loads, clay sports, and even bird hunting. One thing worth knowing upfront: the Boss 25 runs best with shells rated at 1,300 fps or higher. Lighter target loads can cause inconsistent cycling, so stick with standard velocity or above for reliable function. For slugs, run a cylinder or improved cylinder choke and stick to rifled slugs since this is a smoothbore barrel. Per Citadel's own guidelines, avoid full or improved modified choke constrictions with steel shot.

Two 5-round detachable steel box magazines are included, and the platform also accepts higher-capacity AR-12 style magazines and drums available from third-party sources. The overall length comes in at 41", making it a reasonably compact and maneuverable package for the gauge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ammunition does the Citadel Boss 25 cycle reliably?

The Boss 25 is a gas-operated semi-auto and works best with shells rated at 1,300 fps or higher. Lighter promotional target loads and low-brass budget shells tend to short-stroke the action and cause feeding issues. Stick with standard or high-velocity loads for consistent cycling, and the gun runs very well. Most defensive buckshot and hunting loads are well within that velocity range and should give you zero issues.

Does the Boss 25 come with choke tubes, and what types are included?

Yes, five screw-in choke tubes are included covering cylinder through full constrictions. That's a notably generous package for a tactical-style shotgun that most buyers are picking up for defensive use. Keep in mind that Citadel advises against using full or improved modified chokes with steel shot, and to stick to cylinder or improved cylinder when shooting slugs since the Boss 25 has a smoothbore barrel.

Can I add optics or accessories to the Boss 25?

The Boss 25 is set up well for accessories. The receiver has a full-length Picatinny top rail for mounting red dots, holographic sights, or magnified optics, and adjustable folding iron sights come installed as a backup. The forend features Picatinny, M-Lok, and Keymod attachment points for lights, foregrips, and other additions. It's one of the more accessory-ready shotguns at its price point.

How does the Boss 25 compare to a traditional pump shotgun in terms of handling?

The Boss 25 is built to feel like an AR rather than a traditional shotgun. The pistol grip, adjustable stock, and magazine-fed design make transitions easy for anyone already comfortable with the AR platform. The gas-operated action also softens the felt recoil noticeably compared to a pump-action, which is a real bonus during longer range sessions or when running 3-gun stages.

Can I use higher-capacity magazines with the Boss 25?

The shotgun ships with two 5-round steel box magazines. The platform is compatible with AR-12 style magazines and drums available from third-party manufacturers, so capacity options exist for applications where larger magazines are appropriate. Always verify that any aftermarket magazine is compatible with the Boss 25 specifically before purchasing.

Is the pistol grip on the Boss 25 replaceable?

Yes. The Boss 25 uses a standard AR-15 compatible pistol grip, so swapping it out for any aftermarket AR grip is a simple, tool-friendly upgrade. That's a handy detail for anyone who already has a preferred grip or wants to personalize the feel of the gun without spending much money.
