Description

Before Winchester ever stamped its name on a lever gun, there was the 1866, the Improved Henry. Nelson King's patented side loading gate and the addition of a wood forearm fixed the Henry's biggest headaches, and the gleaming brass frame earned it the nickname Yellowboy from the Plains tribes who prized it. Cimarron's Sporting Rifle version recreates that piece of history in shootable form, chambered in .45 Colt with a 24 inch tapered octagon barrel, a polished brass receiver, buttplate, and forend cap, and genuine walnut furniture wearing a traditional straight grip stock.

Uberti Craftsmanship Behind the Yellowboy Name

Cimarron has these rifles built by Uberti in Italy, and the attention to detail shows. The barrel carries the authentic King's patent markings in the same configuration as the originals, and the caliber designations follow the historic style. Plenty of parts even interchange with period rifles, which tells you how faithful this reproduction runs. The standard blue finish on the barrel plays off that yellow brass frame the way it did a century and a half ago, and the full-length tube magazine feeds through the side gate just like King intended.

Shooting the Cimarron 1866 Sporting Rifle

The slab-sided profile that made the original '66 a natural fit for a saddle scabbard also makes this one a smooth handler at the range. At around 8.2 pounds, the rifle soaks up the mild recoil of .45 Colt, and the long sight radius from that 24 inch barrel pairs nicely with the adjustable rear sight for steady work on steel or paper. Cowboy action competitors gravitate to the 1866 for its slick action and fast cycling, and it earns its keep just as well as a woods gun or a weekend plinker that draws a crowd every time the case opens.

Why the 1866 Yellowboy Still Matters

Over 170,000 originals were made between 1866 and 1898, carried by everyone from Sitting Bull to railroad engineers. Owning one of Cimarron's reproductions is the closest most of us will get to that history without a collector's budget, and this one you can shoot all day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes the Cimarron 1866 Yellowboy?

Cimarron Firearms has this rifle manufactured by Uberti in Italy, widely regarded as the top maker of Old West reproductions. Cimarron adds its own touches, including authentic King's patent barrel markings placed in the same configuration as the original 1866 rifles. Many parts will even interchange with period originals.

What ammo should I run in the 1866 Yellowboy Sporting Rifle?

Stick with standard pressure .45 Colt loads, which is exactly what this brass-framed design was built around. Cowboy action loads with lead bullets are the classic pairing and keep the action running smooth for years. There is no shortage of factory ammo in this category, and it is a favorite among handloaders too.

Is the Cimarron 1866 good for cowboy action shooting?

It is one of the most popular choices in the sport. The 1866 action is known for being exceptionally slick and fast to cycle, and the 24 inch octagon barrel gives you a long sight radius for knocking down steel in a hurry. It fits the period-correct requirements of cowboy action matches right out of the box.

How does the 1866 load, from the tube or a side gate?

This is the rifle that introduced the side loading gate. Nelson King's 1866 patent added the gate on the right side of the brass frame, which is why the model was originally called the Improved Henry. You feed rounds through the gate into the full-length tube magazine under the barrel.
