There is a reason the Chipmunk has been the go-to first rifle for generations of families. It is a manually cocked, single shot bolt action chambered in 22 LR, which means every shot is deliberate. Load a round, close the bolt, pull the cocking knob when you are ready, then take your shot. That process builds good habits from day one, and the rebounding firing pin stays blocked until the knob is intentionally cocked, so the rifle only fires when the shooter means for it to.
This second generation model fixes the one gripe people had with the original: loading. The EZ Loader feed ramp guides that little 22 round right into the chamber, so small fingers are not fumbling at the breech. Keystone also upgraded to a metal cocking knob and a metal front sight post, both welcome changes over the older plastic parts. The rear peep sight adjusts for windage and elevation, and the peep-and-post setup teaches proper sight alignment better than open notch sights ever will.
The camo laminate stock is the standout on this version. Laminate is tougher and more stable than plain hardwood, so it shrugs off dings, moisture, and truck rides better than a standard walnut stock, and the green camo pattern just looks sharp at the range. Up front you get a 16.1 inch tapered blued barrel that keeps the whole package light and short, with a length of pull around 11.6 inches sized for smaller frames. Sling swivel studs come installed from the factory, so adding a sling for squirrel hunts or walks to the back forty takes about two minutes.
A light trigger pull in the three pound range and next to zero recoil make this a rifle a kid can shoot all afternoon without developing a flinch. It works just as well for plinking cans as it does for teaching fundamentals before moving up to a repeater. Simple, sturdy, American made, and built for the job. Not much more you can ask from a first 22.
It is one of the best options out there for exactly that. The short 11.625 inch length of pull fits smaller shooters properly, the single shot design keeps the focus on one careful shot at a time, and the manual cocking knob means the rifle stays inert until an adult or supervised shooter deliberately readies it. The rebounding firing pin adds another layer of protection against unintentional discharge.
The Gen2 adds the EZ Loader feed ramp, which makes chambering a round much easier for small hands, plus an upgraded metal cocking knob and metal front sight post in place of the older plastic parts. Swivel studs also come installed from the factory, so it is sling ready out of the box.
Yes, the receiver accepts Keystone's scope base, sold separately, so you can add a rimfire scope down the road. That said, the factory adjustable peep rear and fixed post front sights are a great teaching setup, and plenty of folks never feel the need to add glass to this rifle.
This model is chambered for 22 LR. Since it is a manually loaded single shot with the EZ Loader ramp, you do not have to worry about magazine feeding, but for best accuracy and reliable extraction, stick with standard or high velocity 22 LR ammunition.
