Description

The Spencer was the rifle that changed everything. Designed by Christopher Miner Spencer and carried by Union cavalry during the Civil War, it gave troopers seven shots from a tube magazine in the buttstock while everyone else was still fumbling with muzzleloaders. Chiappa's 1860 Spencer Carbine recreates that piece of history with modern CNC machining, and this version swaps the obsolete 56-50 rimfire for .45 Long Colt so you can feed it with ammo off any gun shop shelf.

How the Chiappa Spencer Carbine Runs

This is not your typical Winchester-pattern lever gun, and that is half the fun. Working the lever drops the block, ejects the spent case, and feeds a fresh round from the seven-shot buttstock magazine. Then you cock the hammer by hand, just like troopers did in 1863. It slows you down a touch, but it connects you to the original manual of arms in a way few reproductions can. The sights are period-correct too, with a dovetail blade up front and a ladder-style adjustable rear for stretching the .45 Colt out past casual plinking distance.

Built Like the Original, Finished Better

Every metal component starts as solid steel and gets CNC-machined to tolerances the original armories could only dream about, close enough that parts will interchange with period Spencers. The 20 inch round barrel wears a deep blue finish, the receiver shows off color case-hardening, and the stock and forend are hand-oiled walnut. At roughly 9 pounds with a 37 inch overall length, it carries and points like the cavalry carbine it copies.

Who the Spencer .45 LC Is For

If you're into Civil War history, reenacting, N-SSA style shooting, or you just want a lever action nobody else at the range will have, this one earns its spot in the safe. It's a working rifle with museum looks, and .45 Colt keeps range days simple and pleasant on the shoulder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Chiappa Spencer Carbine work like a normal lever action?

Not quite, and that's by design. Cycling the lever ejects the spent case and chambers a fresh round from the seven-shot tube in the buttstock, but you cock the hammer manually before each shot, exactly like the 1860 original. It takes a range session to get the rhythm down, then it becomes second nature.

Where is the magazine on the Spencer 1860 Carbine?

The tube magazine runs through the buttstock rather than under the barrel like most lever guns. It holds seven rounds of .45 Long Colt and loads through the butt of the stock. It's one of the Spencer design's signature features and part of what made it revolutionary during the Civil War.

Why is this Spencer chambered in .45 Colt instead of the original caliber?

The original Spencer used the 56-50 rimfire cartridge, which hasn't been in regular production for over a century. Chiappa offers this carbine in .45 Long Colt so you can shoot it with widely available ammo, including easy-recoiling cowboy loads. Chiappa does make a 56-50 centerfire version if you want the period cartridge, but the .45 Colt is far easier to keep fed.

Is the Chiappa Spencer a faithful reproduction or a modernized version?

It's remarkably faithful. All the metal parts are CNC-machined from solid steel to close enough tolerances that they'll interchange with original Spencer components, and the color case receiver, blued barrel, and oiled walnut match the period look. The main change is the modern .45 Colt chambering, which makes it practical to shoot regularly.
