There is something about a lever action .22 that never gets old, and Chiappa's LA322 Takedown adds a genuinely useful trick to the formula. Loosen the knurled takedown screw on the receiver and the rifle separates into two halves, no tools needed, so it stows in a pack or behind the truck seat without eating up space. The screw even has a slot cut in it, so if you snug it down too tight you can back it off with a coin or the spine of a pocket knife. Reassembly takes seconds, and having the action split open makes cleaning a whole lot easier than fishing patches through a fixed-frame lever gun.
The LA322 wears its Winchester-inspired styling well. You get a straight English-style walnut stock and forend, a matte black receiver, and an 18.5 inch blued steel barrel with 6-groove, 1:16 twist rifling. The tubular magazine under the barrel holds 15 rounds of .22 LR, loaded through a brass inner tube with a knurled cap up front. Sights are a semi-buckhorn adjustable rear paired with a hooded front, a setup that feels right at home on a traditional carbine, and the receiver is drilled and tapped if you would rather run an optic. At around 5.5 pounds, it swings quick and carries all day without complaint.
This is the rifle you grab for a lazy afternoon of plinking, a squirrel walk, or getting a new shooter comfortable behind a long gun. The .22 LR chambering keeps ammo cheap and recoil basically nonexistent, while the half-cock hammer safety keeps things simple and familiar for anyone raised on classic lever guns. Working the lever between shots slows the pace down in a good way, and the takedown feature means it travels wherever the weekend takes you. It is a fun gun first and foremost, and it does that job very well.
There is a captured knurled screw on the right side of the receiver. With the rifle unloaded and the lever open, loosen the screw by hand and the rifle separates into two halves at the receiver. The screw also has a slot cut in it, so a coin or flathead works if it is torqued down tight. Reassembly is just as quick and requires no tools.
Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped, so you can add a rail or scope base and run an optic. Plenty of owners keep the semi-buckhorn irons for their classic look, but the option is there if your eyes prefer glass.
It loads like most traditional rimfire lever guns. Twist and pull the knurled cap at the front of the magazine tube, drop up to 15 rounds of .22 LR into the brass inner tube, then reinsert and lock the follower. Work the lever to chamber a round and you are ready to shoot.
It is a great trainer. The .22 LR chambering means almost no recoil and inexpensive ammo, and the manually operated lever action encourages deliberate, one-shot-at-a-time habits. Keep in mind it is a full adult-size rifle, so very small-framed beginners may need a little time to grow into the length of pull.
