Most revolvers send recoil up and over your wrist. The Chiappa Rhino sends it straight back into your arm, because it fires from the bottom chamber of the cylinder instead of the top. That single design choice drops the bore axis down almost level with your hand, and the result is a .357 Magnum with noticeably less muzzle flip than a conventional wheelgun of similar size. Once you put a cylinder of full-power magnums through one, going back to a traditional revolver feels like a step in the wrong direction.
This X version pairs a stainless steel 3-inch barrel and cylinder with a lightweight alloy frame, so you get the durability and looks of stainless where it counts without lugging around a boat anchor. The black and red G10 grips give you a firm, weatherproof hold, and the sights are a genuine upgrade over most snub-adjacent revolvers: a bright fiber optic front paired with a fully adjustable rear, so you can dial in your preferred load instead of settling for close enough. The hexagonal cylinder keeps the profile slim, and the flat-sided design carries better than its stats suggest.
As an SAR model, this Rhino runs single action, and what looks like a hammer is really a cocking lever that returns flush after each pull, with a small indicator flag showing when the internal hammer is cocked. The firing mechanism is fully enclosed and snag resistant. Chambered for .357 Magnum, it also happily digests .38 Special for cheaper, softer range sessions, and the three included moon clips make reloads quick and keep your empties together.
Between the stainless finish, upgraded sights, and G10 grips, this is one of the sharper configurations in the Rhino lineup. It works as a range gun, a trail companion, or simply the most interesting revolver in the safe. Either way, it shoots better than it looks, and it looks pretty good.
Yes. Like any .357 Magnum revolver, it safely fires .38 Special as well, which makes for cheaper and softer practice sessions. Between the .38 option and the Rhino's low bore axis design, this is a very comfortable gun to spend a full range day with.
The Rhino fires from the bottom chamber of the cylinder instead of the top, which puts the bore nearly in line with your hand and forearm. Recoil pushes straight back rather than flipping the muzzle up, so felt recoil and muzzle rise are significantly reduced compared to a conventional revolver. With full-power .357 Magnum loads, the difference is immediately noticeable.
Not exactly. The external lever is a cocking device that operates the fully enclosed internal hammer, then returns to its resting position. A visible cocked indicator lets you know when the internal hammer is back, and the design keeps the top of the gun snag free.
The three included moon clips make reloading faster and let you eject all six empties as one unit, so they are worth using. They hold your rounds together in a full-cylinder set, which is handy at the range or in the field. Extra clips are inexpensive and easy to find if you want to keep several loaded.
