Chiappa built the M1-22 Commemorative Edition to mark 80 years since the end of WWII, and they kept the run tight at just 1,945 rifles to match the year. Underneath the tribute is the same M1-22 platform folks have been plinking with for years: a blowback semi-auto chambered in .22 LR that holds the same overall dimensions, trigger group layout, and sight picture as the original M1 Carbine. At 35 inches overall and around 5.5 pounds, it carries and shoulders just like the real deal, which is a big part of the charm.
The fixed walnut stock and forend are the first things you notice, paired with a matte blued 18 inch steel barrel and steel bolt riding in a lightweight alloy receiver. The rear sight is a fully adjustable M1 military style unit matched to a period-correct front post, so dialing it in for your favorite bulk ammo is quick work. A green canvas sling rounds out the GI look, and the whole package is built to spend as much time on the wall as it does at the range. The 1:16 twist barrel handles standard and high velocity .22 LR loads, and the 10 round magazine keeps the profile slim.
This is one of those rifles that pulls double duty. Collectors will appreciate the numbered limited run and commemorative touches, but it would be a shame to leave it in the box. Rimfire ammo is cheap, recoil is basically nonexistent, and the manual safety and simple controls make it a great trainer for new folks or a fun history lesson for anyone who grew up hearing about the original carbine. If you have wanted an M1 Carbine feel without hunting down a surplus example, this one scratches that itch and gives you a story to go with it.

No, since it is a .22 LR blowback design it uses Chiappa's own 10 round rimfire magazines, not surplus .30 Carbine mags. That said, the rifle keeps the same overall dimensions and trigger group layout as the original, and the stock is designed to interchange with original M1 Carbine stocks, so the handling feels authentic.
Like most blowback rimfire semi-autos, it cycles most reliably with standard or high velocity 40 grain loads. Quality bulk ammo works fine for plinking, and the fully adjustable military style rear sight lets you zero for whatever load you settle on. Subsonic and match ammo may not always cycle the action consistently.
Both, really. The walnut furniture, blued finish, and commemorative touches make it display worthy, but underneath it is the same proven M1-22 platform Chiappa has offered for years. It is light, soft shooting, and cheap to feed, so plenty of owners shoot theirs regularly and keep the packaging for down the road.
