Most carry revolvers come in two flavors: black or stainless. The Charter Arms Merlot breaks that mold with a rich, wine-red anodized frame set against a blacked-out barrel and cylinder, and the result is a snub nose with genuine personality. Model 53822 is built on the Undercover Lite platform, which means you get a 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum frame that keeps the whole package feathery enough to ride in a pocket holster or purse all day without becoming a chore.
The fundamentals here are what have kept Charter Arms snub noses in circulation since the 1960s. Five rounds of .38 Special sit in a compact cylinder behind a 2-inch barrel, with fixed sights that stay zeroed and never snag. The standard exposed hammer gives you the option of a deliberate single-action press for a lighter, crisper trigger pull, or you can run it double action when speed matters. Charter's one-piece frame design skips the side plate found on most competing revolvers, and the barrel threads directly into the frame for added strength. A full hammer block system means the hammer cannot fall unless the trigger is fully to the rear.
Every Charter Arms revolver is American made, and registering your new Merlot with the factory qualifies it for the company's lifetime warranty. That is real peace of mind on a gun you may carry for decades. The rubber grip soaks up recoil better than you would expect from a lightweight frame, and .38 Special stays pleasant enough that regular practice is realistic rather than something you dread.
This one gets a lot of attention from folks who want a dependable defensive revolver that does not look like everything else in the case. It makes a great first revolver, a thoughtful gift for a new carrier, or a stylish backup for someone who already trusts the Charter platform. Simple to run, easy to carry, and easy on the eyes.
That's exactly what it was built for. The lightweight aluminum frame, 2-inch barrel, and snag-free fixed sights make it easy to carry in a pocket holster, on the belt, or in a bag. Five rounds of .38 Special in a package this light is a proven recipe for everyday carry.
Lightweight snub noses always kick a bit more than heavier steel guns, and that's true here too. The rubber grip does a nice job soaking up the snap, and most people adjust quickly after a range session or two. Standard pressure .38 Special loads keep practice comfortable.
Yes. The Merlot has a standard exposed hammer, so you can thumb it back for a lighter, crisper single-action trigger pull or simply pull the trigger in double action. That flexibility is handy for both range practice and defensive use.
Charter Arms backs its revolvers with a lifetime warranty, and they recommend registering your purchase with the factory right away to qualify. Every Charter revolver, including the Merlot, is made in the USA at their Connecticut facility.
