The Bulldog has been earning its keep since 1973, back when U.S. Sky Marshals trusted it in the air, and the formula has never really needed fixing. Five rounds of .44 S&W Special, a 2.5 inch barrel, and a curb weight right around 20 ounces. That is featherweight territory for a big bore wheelgun, and it is exactly why this revolver has stayed in production for over fifty years while plenty of trendier designs came and went.
The .44 Special is one of those cartridges that gets overlooked and shouldn't be. It throws a big, heavy bullet at moderate pressure, which means you get considerably more muzzle energy than a .38 Special without the sharp blast and recoil of a .357 Magnum out of a short barrel. In a defensive revolver that lives in a holster or a nightstand, that trade is hard to argue with. Five big rounds beat six small ones in a lot of situations, and the full rubber combat grips soak up enough recoil to keep follow-up shots manageable.
This version of the Bulldog wears Charter's Blacknitride+ treatment, a surface process that hardens the steel, cuts friction, and resists scratches far better than traditional bluing. It also helps protect the rifling and chambers over the long haul, so a gun that gets carried in sweat and weather stays looking and running right. Underneath it all is a stainless steel frame, so corrosion resistance runs more than skin deep.
The action is double action/single action with an exposed hammer, so you can run it fast with a straight double action pull or cock it for a lighter, crisper break when precision matters. Fixed sights mean nothing to knock loose or snag, and a transfer bar safety keeps it drop safe while still being ready the moment you need it. At 7.25 inches overall, it hides easily and rides comfortably, which is the whole point of a Bulldog.
It has some push, but it is more of a firm shove than a sharp snap. The .44 Special runs at much lower pressure than a .357 Magnum, so it delivers big-bore energy without the harsh muzzle blast, and the finger-grooved rubber grips do a good job soaking it up. Most people find it very manageable for practice sessions and confidence-building range time.
This model, 64420, is a traditional double action/single action with an exposed hammer. You can fire it straight through with a double action pull or thumb the hammer back for a lighter single action break. That gives you flexibility for both defensive use and slower, more precise shooting at the range.
Blacknitride+ is Charter's proprietary surface treatment that hardens the metal rather than just coating it. It resists scratches and holster wear, reduces friction in the action, and helps extend the life of the rifling and chambers. Combined with the stainless steel frame underneath, it holds up very well to daily carry and sweat exposure.
No. The Bulldog is chambered strictly for .44 S&W Special, and .44 Magnum will not chamber in it, nor is the gun built for magnum pressures. Stick with quality .44 Special loads, which offer plenty of defensive performance with heavy, wide bullets at moderate velocity.
