Charter Arms took their flagship .44 Special Bulldog, the revolver that built their reputation, and reworked it into something even more carry-focused. The result is the Boomer, a five-shot stainless snub with a 2 inch tapered barrel that has been ported to tame muzzle rise. The hammer is bobbed for double-action-only operation, and there is no front sight blade to hang up on a pocket, waistband, or cover garment when you need it out in a hurry. This is a revolver built around one job: getting a big-bore payload on target at close range without anything slowing down the draw.
.44 Special has been a trusted defensive round for over a century, and it hits with real authority out of a short barrel without the punishing blast of a magnum. The barrel porting vents gases upward to help keep the muzzle settled between shots, and the full-size finger-grooved rubber grip gives your whole hand something to hold onto. The matte stainless construction shrugs off sweat and holster wear, which matters on a gun meant to be carried close to the body day in and day out.
At roughly 20 ounces with an overall length under 7 inches, the Boomer carries lighter than you would expect from a large-frame wheelgun. The grip frame is shared with the standard Bulldog, so the aftermarket of compact and boot-style Charter grips fits right on if you want to slim it down further. The double-action-only trigger keeps the manual of arms dead simple: aim and press.

The Boomer is a carry-tuned version of the classic Bulldog. It shares the same frame, five-shot fluted cylinder, and grip frame, but swaps in a shorter 2 inch tapered barrel with porting, a bobbed hammer for double-action-only operation, and deletes the front sight so nothing snags on the draw. Think of it as the Bulldog stripped down to its close-range essentials.
The Boomer is purpose-built for close-quarters defensive distances where point shooting and the rear sight channel get the job done. At typical defensive ranges inside 7 to 10 yards, indexing the gun naturally puts rounds where they need to go with a little practice. It trades precision sighting for a completely snag-free draw, which is the whole point of this design.
The ports vent gas upward at the muzzle, which helps counteract muzzle flip between shots. Combined with the full rubber finger-grooved grip, it makes a lightweight .44 Special noticeably more controllable for fast follow-up shots. Keep in mind ported barrels do produce more flash and noise, so quality ear protection at the range is a good idea.
Yes. The Boomer uses the same grip frame as the standard Bulldog, so any Charter Arms grip made for that frame will fit, including their compact and boot-style options. Plenty of owners swap to a smaller grip to make the gun even easier to conceal, while others stick with the factory full-size rubber grip for the extra recoil control.
