The 66% IPSC is what a lot of folks land on when the full-size feels like overkill and the little 33% is too much of a squint. It splits the difference at 20 inches tall by 12 inches wide, cut from 3/8-inch through-hardened AR500 plate. That steel is rated up to 3,000 fps impact velocity and 3,500 ft-lbs of impact energy, so it laughs off pistol calibers and handles plenty of rifle work without cratering or pockmarking the way softer steel does.
Set it up around 10 to 15 yards and it ramps the challenge over a full-size silhouette in a hurry, which is exactly why it's a favorite for transition drills and working accuracy up close. At 21 pounds it's easy to carry out to your spot, hang, and pack up when you're done. Buying two or three of these to run transitions and light stage planning is a lot more realistic than stocking up on the 48-pound full size, and it still gives you a proper competition footprint to train against.
Caldwell builds these to work with a few different hanging solutions, including the 2×4 plate hanger and the T-post hanger. The 2×4 bracket slips right over the top of a standard board and lets you swap the wood when it eventually chews up, and the T-post version drops onto a post you've already got planted at the range. Both let you adjust the height, so you can raise or lower the plate to mimic different target presentations. A quick note worth remembering: mind your velocity charts and keep smart distances, because a screaming varmint round like a 22-250 can punch through steel that stops everything else cold.
Every one of these targets gets a powder coat finish in a bright, easy-to-see color so you can call your hits from the firing line. The paint takes a beating over time, which is normal for steel, but the plate underneath keeps ringing for years of regular use.
